< A Diary of Journey to Youngwoel >, a drama written by Lee Kang-baek is based on virtual classics ≪ A Diary of Journey to Youngwoel ≫ as a material and presents the ontologic issues of political society and people. In oder to express various and complex issues effectively in the form of a drama that is unable to transcend the limitations of time, space and characters, Lee Kang-baek seemed to have deeply been interested in textual characteristics, especially, poetic features. Poetics used in the drama, such as metaphor, metonymy, symbol, and irony, are operated as effective ones to show the human image and world picture both in the past and at present, which occur in the 500 year distance, in various aspects. < A Diary of Journey to Youngwoel > is within the large frame of both the same and difference of the past and present, going over between the two. The same refers to something unchanging and universal in the world, though time flies, whereas the difference presents something evolving and changing. For example, something invisible and spiritual-human obsessive desire for power (the past) and materials (the present), and the consequent anxiety, freedom of the existence, pursuit of happiness, and impossibility of realization of such things-transcends time and space, remaining in the human society. On the contrary, visible and physical world, which is replaced into a monitoring system through metonymy, changes enormously owing to the development of science and civilization. That serves as a role to oppress the human dignity and freedom more precisely and quickly. In the respect, the drama involves the emptiness of advancement. In other words, < A Diary of Journey to Youngwoel > is a dramatic discourse upon the contradiction of the existence and history. In particular, the author tries to show the value recognition of both the existence and freedom in a dramatic discussion. That features dilemma in the point that the two are unforgivable values for people. Just as people don`t normally understand that their desperate pursuit of freedom as a true condition of life results in the worst death, it is hard to understand the thinking of a wife who is willing to become a servant of her husband, pursuing safe life rather than freedom in the modern society. Nevertheless, such a dilemma could and can always remain both in the past and at present in people`s life. Therefore, it means that human mind is hardly understandable so that it originally holds contradiction. < A Diary of Journey to Youngwoel > shows the issue through the dramatic comparison and contrast of a historic material and present circumstances in a discussion. Therefore, this drama is aimed at reflecting human existence and the truth of life by allowing readers to recognize the present through the past and vice versa.
