본 연구는 평생교육기관 종사자들이 장애인을 나타낸 은유를 분석함으로써, 장애인에 대한 이들의 주관적인 인식을 살펴보고, 장애인 평생교육의 활성화를 위한 실제적 시사점을 찾고자 하였다. 이를 위해 2개 대도시, 2개 도의 평생교육원 종사자, 사회복지관 종사자, 학교 교사를 대상으로 장애인에 대한 은유적 표현을 수집한 후 141명의 응답을 분석하였다. 이들이 밝힌 장애인에 대한 은유와 그 근거를 반복적으로 읽고 범주화한 결과 89가지의 은유가 도출되었으며, 이 은유적 표현들은 ‘다름없는 존재’, ‘도움이 필요한 대상’, ‘힘의 잠재’, ‘제한과 불편함’, ‘삶의 동반자’의 5가지 주제로 범주화 되었다. 한편 평생교육기관 종사자들의 장애인에 대한 은유의 범주는 성별, 연령, 근무기관에는 차이가 없으나, 장애인 교육경험 여부에 따라서는 달리 나타났다. 이 연구를 통해 평생교육기관 종사자들이 장애인에 대해 가지는 다양한 차원의 인식을 검출할 수 있었으며, 장애인 평생교육의 기반 구축과 인력 양성ㆍ지원체제에 주는 시사점이 제시되었다.

The purpose of the study is to examine awareness of lifelong education institute workers towards people with disabilities through metaphors analysis and find a way to vitalize lifelong education for people with disabilities. Data was collected from 141 participants who are currently employed at lifelong education centers, social welfare centers, and schools in two major metropolitan cities and two provinces and this was used for the final data analysis. After reviewing participants’ responses repetitively, eighty nine metaphors were withdrawn and those were conceptually categorized into five themes: (1) General being; (2) Persons with special needs; (3) Ability with potential; (4) Limitations and discomforts; and (5) Life companion. In addition. metaphors concerning people with disabilities differed according to workers’ teaching experience. But metaphors concerning people with disabilities made little different according to workers’ gender, age, and workplace. This study found a variety of awareness of lifelong education institute workers on people with disabilities. On a basis of the results, ways how to establish the foundation of lifelong education for people with disabilities, train professionals, and develop support systems were discussed.
