보조용언 구문은 본용언과 보조용언이 성분을 이루는 단문 구조라는 주장과 내포절을 갖는 복문 구조라는 주장이 대립된다. 그러나 보조용언 구문은 두 구조를 모두 지닌다는 것이 이정훈(2010ㄱ, ㄴ)에서 주장되었는데, 이는 부사어의 수식 영역 등을 통해서도 확인되고, 부정극어의 인허 현상을 통해서도 확인될 수 있다. 이와 같은 의미 구조와 통사 구조의 상관성을 중시한다면 보조용언 구문은 이중적 구조를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 이러한 이중적 구조는 개별 보조용언 구문마다 자동적으로 갖는 것이 아니라, 화자가 그 표현의도에 따라 어느 하나를 선택하는 구조라는 특성을 지닌다.

There are oppositive views about Korean Auxiliary Verb Constructions(AVCs), one is simple sentence construction, and the other is complex sentence. But, C. H. Lee(2010ㄱ, ㄴ) argued that the Korean AVCs have structural duality. We can the fact from two grammatical phenomena, the scope of adverbial`s modification, and the phenomena of licensing of negative polarity items. If we put stress on the relation of semantic structure and syntactic structure, we can be convinced that the Korean AVCs have structural duality. Every AVC sentences don`t have these two structures. The structure of the sentence is one of those two structures, which is selected by the speaker following his expression intention.
