한국현대시사에서 윤동주 시는 대체로 시사적 맥락보다는 작품 세계의 독자적 의미를 중심으로 논의되어왔다. 1950년대 이후 오랜 시간 동안 윤동주 문학은 주로 민족주의적 시각에서 평가되었고, 그에 대한 논의는 `일제 말기의 대표적 저항 문학` 또는 `암흑기의 별`이라는 비유적 표현을 통해 사후적으로 구성되었다. 비록 시인으로 등단한 상황은 아니었지만, 윤동주의 창작 활동이 집중적으로 이루어졌던 시기가 1930년대 중반에서 1940년대 초반에 이른다는 점을 감안한다면, 그에 대한 평가 역시 해방 이후의 사후적 관점이 아니라 시인 당대의 맥락에서 시도될 필요가 있다. 그런 점에서 정지용은 윤동주 문학의 시사적 맥락과 당대적 의미를 고찰하는 데 중요한 매개항이 될 수 있다. 정지용은 1930년대 대표적 시인으로서 당대 문단에 깊은 영향을 끼쳤던 시인이다. 당시 시인 지망생이었던 윤동주 역시 정지용의 영향 속에서 습작을 지속했고, 정지용 문학과의 긴장과 갈등, 영향과 수용, 그리고 이탈과 창조라는 과정을 거치며 자신의 문학 세계를 형성해 나간다. 정지용 문학의 특장인 재현과 직유는 윤동주 초기 문학 형성의 주요한 자원이라고 할 수 있다. 윤동주의 시는 그 자신 시의 매재인 언어 자체에 주목하고 사물에 대한 예민한 지각과 표현에 몰두하며, 일상 대화의 어법을 구사하여 자연스러운 표현과 리듬을 창조하고 시의 표현 양식에 대해 고민하고 실험하면서, 정지용과 마찬가지로 그가 1930년대 시단의 당면 과제에 모더니스트로서 충실하게 대응하고 있었음을 보여준다. 그러나 습작기 초기에 정지용 시의 영향을 적극적으로 수용했던 윤동주는 점차 그 영향권 내에서 자신의 시적 방법을 “수정주의적”으로 모색한다. 윤동주는 『정지용 시집』을 자신의 관점으로 고쳐 읽으며 정지용과 다른 자신의 시적 주제와 방법을 모색해 나간다. 시인 자신이 말했듯 “안으로 열하고 밖으로 서늘옵기”를 추구하며 자신의 내면을 잘 드러내지 않았던 정지용과 달리, 윤동주는 내적 고민의 흔적을 드러내는 시적 방법을 추구한다. 타자로서의 내면을 발견하고 그것을 재현하는 방법을 실험하며, 특히 후기로 갈수록 “시대”, “사랑”, “추억”, “역사”, “희생” 등 추상적 관념에 대한 내적 고민의 흔적을 짙게 드러낸다. 이 과정에서 윤동주는 추상적 대상이 원관념으로 사용되는 시적 비유의 일반적 방법을 뒤집어 보조관념으로 적극 활용하면서, 그 하나 하나의 관념을 주목하게 할 뿐 아니라 그러한 관념들에 대한 자신의 내적 고민의 흔적을 짙게 드러내고 또한 시적 애매성의 효과를 고양시킨다.

Yun Dong Ju`s poetry in the history of modern Korean poetry has been mostly discussed in independent meanings in its literary world rather than in the literary historical context. For a long time after the 1950s, Yun Dong Ju`s literature was criticized in a nationalist perspective, and discussion on Yun Dong Ju was later carried out after his death through the metaphor `representative resistance literature in late Japanese imperialism` or `star of dark ages`. Although he hadn`t started his literary career as a poet, considering that his creative activity was centrally conducted during mid 1930s and early 1940s, criticism on Yun Dong Ju should be attempted in a contemporary context rather than in a viewpoint after liberation after his death. In that respect, Jeong Ji Young can be an important standard to study the literary historical context and the contemporary meaning of Yun Dong Ju`s literature. Jeong Ji Young is a representative poet of the 1930s who had great influence on its contemporary literary circle. Yun Dong Ju who had been a literary aspirant during that time continued writing under Jeong Ji Young`s influence, and he formed his literary world through the process of tension and conflict, influence and acceptance, and finally breakaway and creation from Jeong Ji Young`s literature. Yun Dong Ju shows aspects of a modernist like Jeong Ji Young in that he focused on the method and effect of medium itself, focused on keen awareness and expression about objects, and contemplated and experimented about form of poetic expression. In his early years of practice, Jun Dong Ju who had embraced the influence of Jeong Ji Young`s poetry gradually sought his poetical methods in a "revisionist" way in the boundary of his influence. Yun Dong Ju interpreted Poetical Works of Jeong Ji Young in his point of view and sought his own poetical theme and method different from Jeong Ji Young. As the poet himself said, "internally enthusiastic and externally restrained“, Jeong Ji Young mostly did not reveal his inner side, whereas Yun Dong Ju pursued a poetic method that revealed the trace of contemplation. Especially towards his late years, it can be seen that he shows traces of deep contemplation on abstract concepts such as "age", "love", "memories", "history", "sacrifice", etc. In the process, Yun Dong Ju reversed the general method of poetic metaphor where abstract objects are used as tenor and actively used it as vehicle. In this way, he not only allows each and every concept to stand out but also emphasizes traces of his contemplation and elevates the effect of poetic ambiguity.
