이 논문은 김원일의 중편소설 「환멸을 찾아서」에 드러난 근대사회의 남성성과 전쟁의 이데올로기 문제에 대해 고찰하고 있는 연구이다. 이산가족 문제를 다루고 있는 이 소설에서는 6·25 한국전쟁과 남북분단에 의해 형성되거나 분열된 세 가구의 삶을 보여주고 있다. 이북에 가족을 두고 홀로 월남한 인물인 오영감, 이남에 가족을 두고 월북한 인물 박중렬, 전쟁 과부로서 재혼을 통해 이부남매를 낳은 문미 어머니 이 세 사람이 각각 새롭게 이룬 가족이 그것이다. 이 중 남성 인물들은 전쟁 이데올로기의 공포를 피하기 위해서, 또는 그것에 호명되어 고향과 가족을 등지게 된 사람들로 나타난다. 이 연구에서는 인물들의 상황과 관계를 중심으로 하여 전쟁과 분단에 대한 이 소설의 서사를 남성성을 전쟁에 동원한 사회적·정치적 이데올로기라는 측면에서 살펴보고 있다. 이때 남성성 이데올로기는 근대에 재생산된 가부장제 이데올로기와 맞물려 전쟁의 상처 또는 소외 의식을 아버지에서 아들로 이어지게 만드는 것으로 그려지고 있다. 다시 말해 「환멸을 찾아서」의 서사에서는 아들들이 허상의 권력구조로서의 가부장제와 전쟁 이데올로기를 인식하지 못하고, 그 안에서 소외의식을 느끼거나 가계의 계승과 무관하게 살아가고자 하는 양상을 찾을 수 있다. 그리고 이 논문에서는 그에 대해 분석함으로써 근대의 남성성이라는 허상이 만들어낸 폭력과 그 환멸에 대해 탐구하고 있다.

This thesis examines the ideology of genders and wars of the modern society expressed in Kim Won-il`s medium-length novel,「Looking for Disillusionment」. This novel deals with the matter of separated families, and tells the stories of the three families formed or divided by Korean War and division, that is, a character who defects to South Korea alone with family left in North Korea, a character who defects to North Korea alone with family left in South Korea, a war widow and their family they have formed respectively. The male characters are depicted as those who turn their backs on their hometown and family in order to avoid the terror of war ideology or by being led by it. In this study, the narrative of this novel about Korean War and division was examined in terms of social and political ideology that mobilizes masculinity into the war. Here, masculinity along with the ideology of patriarchy makes the scars of the war or the sense of isolation be succeeded from fathers to sons. In the novel, the sons are not aware of the ideology of patriarchy and war as an illusionary power structure, and feel alienated in it or try to live unconnected to the succession of their family. Studying on this, this thesis investigates violence and disillusionment created by the illusion of modern masculinity.
