전통적으로 순혈주의와 민족주의 성향이 강한 한국 국민에게 있어 이주민과 외국인의 존재는 너무나도 낯선 존재들이었다. 그러나 체류하는 외국인 및 이주민은 계속해서 증가하고 있고 이중에서도 정주형 이주민이 많아짐에 따라 한국인의 이주민을 향한 인식과 태도에 대한 문제가 제기되고 있다. 아직까지 다른 이민국가와 비교했을 때 이주민에 대한 수용의 정도는 높지 않은 것으로 파악되며, 따라서 본 논문에서는 이주민에 대한 일반국민의 인식을 경험적인 자료를 통해 분석하고 그 의미를 해석하고 시사점을 도출하는데 그 의미가 있다. 연구결과, 개인의 삶에 있어서 외국인이나 이주민이 위협적이라고 인식하는 것이 다른 사회·인구학적 요인이나 해외경험, 다문화 교육 경험 유부 등보다 훨씬 중요하다는 것이 나타났다. 공동체 안에는 다양한 집단이 존재하지만 선주민의 입장에서 보면 이주민은 가장 우선적으로 배제되어야 할 대상이다. 또한 이것은 사회·경제적 상황과 맞물려 있는데 일반적으로 실업률이 높아지거나 경제위기가 닥쳐올 경우, 기타 여러 가지 원인으로 인해 사회적 혼란의 상태가 될 때 선주민은 이주민을 가장 우선적인 외집단으로 분류하며 적대적인 태도를 보인다. 그러나 서구사회와 마찬가지로 교육과 계몽운동을 통한 이주민과 선주민의 공존의 방안을 모색해야 할 것이다.
The existence of immigrants and foreigners was a stranger to Koreans who had traditionally a strong sense of racism and nationalism. However, the number of immigrants and foreigners is continuously increasing, as especially numbers of who are staying in Korea are increasing, there are some issues about Korean`s perception and attitude toward immigrants Still, Korean`s level of multi-cultural acceptability was not high compared to other immigrated countries, and then, it is needed to investigate Korean`s level of multi-cultural acceptability by using national survey data, and suggest implications. According to the results of this study, the most important factor to explain individual`s multi-cultural acceptability was the perception of threat by foreigners and foreign immigrants rather than demographic aspects, living experiences in other countries, or participating in multi-cultural education. Even though there are diverse groups in communities, immigrants are the first eliminating group for non-immigrants. Additionally, if the rate of unemployment is low or economic crisis comes in society or other social problems are spreaded, in turn people experiences social turmoil, non-immigrants have more hostile attitudes toward immigrants treating as a out-group for the first. However, like as western societies, Korea society also need to find alternative ways for coexistence between immigrants and non-immigrants through educations and enlightenments.
