본고에서는 아깟담껑 라피팟의 작품 「상류사회」를 통해 태국의 `평판` 문화에 대해 알아 보았다. 평판을 주도하는 사람은 상류사회의 주류가 되어 자신이 원하는 방향으로 이 사회를 이끌려는 의도가 있다. 상류사회는 평판의 대상이 되는 사람의 행동과 사랑의 자유를 제약하는 일면이 있다. 평판은 청춘남녀가 부모나 보호자의 권위에 순응하게 만드는 역할을 한다. 상류사회는 독신남과 기혼남을 다르게 대한다. 독신남이 여자문제를 일으키면 당사자나 상대 여성뿐 아니라 당사자의 친구까지 상류사회의 평판에 오른다. 그러나 기혼남이 탈선하게 되면 상류사회는 그 책임을 아내에게 전가하며 상관하지 않는다. 상류사회 일원의 조건에는 좋은 혈통과 재산이 있는데, 이런 점이 결여된 일반 남성은 설사 이 사회의 일원이 된다 해도, 결국 이 사회에 머물지 못하게 된다. 올곧은 성품인 왕족들은 나쁜 짓을 저지르는 성격이 좋지 않은 상류사회의 사람들에 대해 우월의식이 있다. 반면 나쁜 사람들은 이 왕족들을 타협을 모르는 오만한 인물로 매도하며 상류사회를 주도하려 하기 때문에 이들 상호간에는 충돌과 대립하는 양상이 드러난다. 평판이란 태국 상류사회를 지탱하는 파수꾼의 역할을 하기도 하지만, 잘못된 평판은 태국사회 전체의 존속조차 위태롭게 하는 일면이 있다.
In this paper, the `reputation` culture of Thailand through Akatdamkoeng Raphiphat`s "High Society" has been examined. The person who can maneuver the society`s reputation is in the mainstream of the high society, and his/her intention is to lead this society into the direction that it wants to go. One of the aspects of a high society is that it restricts the behaviors and love affairs of the person who is the object of reputation. Reputation plays a powerful role in making young men and women compliant with the authority of their parents and guardians. High society treats single men and married men with contradictory standard. When a single man creates a problem with a woman, not only he and she, but his friends will soon become the talk of the town. However, high society does not care when a married man deviates, and transfers the responsibility of his infidelity to his wife. One of the conditions of being a member of high society is a good bloodline and wealth. Even if a lucky ordinary male who lacks those two conditions arises to become a member of the society, he would not last long in the society. Royal members with qualities of upright characteristics feel superior to those of the high class, who have bad disposition and behave badly. On the other hand, the members of the high class attempt to defame the royal families as arrogant people who do not know how to compromise, and they try to take control over the high society through such defamation, thus creating conflicts and opposition sentiments between them. Reputation plays an important role as a watchdog in supporting Thailand`s high society, but if wrongly manipulated, the reputation system can endanger the survival of the entire Thai society.
