이 논문은 프로스트가 당대 세계문학계의 거성 예이츠를 향해 내뱉었던 “진품(genuine)” 시인 논란을 주목하며 그 진의를 파악하고자 한다. 구체적으로 예이츠와 그의 시를 연상시키는 시어나 구절을 담은 「어떤 황금[시대]도 그대로일 수는 없다네(Nothing Gold Can Stay)」, 「삼동관 (Triple Bronze)」, 「한 때 태평양가에서(Once By the Pacific)」를 예이츠의 「황금시대(The Golden Age)」, 「타워(The Tower)」, 「환영의 바다(Shadowy Waters)」 와 비교하며 읽으면서 프로스트가 제기했던 진품 시인 논란이 단순히 예이츠에 대한 질투나 뒤틀린 심사에서 비롯된 것은 아니었다는 점을 조명하고자 한다. 오히려 그런 논란은 대중지향적 미국 사실주의 시인 프로스트와 귀족지향적 아일랜드 낭만주의 시인 예이츠 사이에 존재하던 계층과 민족/국가의 경계선들을 드러내는 단초로 작용하기 때문이다.

This paper takes note on Robert Frost`s satirical remark of Yeats being “always faking” and examines the controversy over the “genuine” poet in the early twentieth century. In particular, reading Frost`s “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” “Triple Bronze,” “Once By the Pacific” in comparison with Yeats`s “The Golden Age,” “The Tower,” “Shadowy Waters,” it makes an attempt to suggest that Frost was not just being mean toward Yeats or jealous of his achievements by calling him “a fake.” Rather, such controversy reveals so far veiled class and national boundaries between popular American realist poet Frost and aristocratic Irish Romantic poet Yeats. Looking into the intertextuality between apparently distanced two national poets will provide a rare opportunity to meditate on the persistent “hides” of class and nation in the world republic of letters.
