1916년 1월 일본에서 황석우가 발행한 『근대사조』는 활자 매체에 머물지않고, 결여된 정치적 자아를 보충하고 확장하는 사상적·인적 네트워크로 기획되었다는 매체적 특성이 있다. 이 잡지는 지배와 피지배관계를 생성·유지시키는 정복 전쟁과 배타적인 충군애국의 국가주의를 반대하고 만민평등 평화주의, 세계주의, 인도주의를 주장하는 글들을 선진사조로 번역·소개했다. 이는 당시의 제1차 세계대전과 식민주의를 반대하는 다이쇼데모크라시의 아나키즘적 풍조와 연결되어 있다. 황석우, 최승구(-나경석), 김억, 정태신 등은 『근대사조』를 통해 1910년대 한국 사회주의(아나키즘)의 인적 계보를 형성하였고, 최승구는 `개인`의 혁명을 도모했던 시인이자, 개인주의적 아나키스트였다. 김억은 개인의 절대 자유를 실현하는 방법으로써 유미주의에 주목하고 이를 삶으로 실천한 오스카 와일드를 소개했다. 또한 김억은 아나키스트의 공식 언어이자, 국제평화주의를 정신으로 하는 에스페란토의 선구자이기도 했다. 김억과 황석우는 개인의 절대 자유, 아나키즘적 사상을 기반으로 자유시의 이념과 형식 원리를 이론화하고자 시도했다. 이렇듯 『근대사조』는 1910년대 사상과 문예의 폭을 넓히고 심화하는 중요한 역할을 하였다.

The Modern Thoughts was first published by Hwang Suk-Woo in January of 1916 and contained 4 pieces of translations, Kim Uyk`s criticism and Choi Seung-Gu`s poems. The 4 translations supported the world pacifism based on harmony, equality and coexistence between man and nature, man and man, nation and nation, and was opposed to the aggressive war. Hwang Suk-Woo attempted to construct an enormous net-work through the magazine by rallying the literary coteries, advertising for the branch offices and organizing the sales chart. The Modern Thoughts was born under the influence of Daisho(大正) Democracy of Japan in 1910s of which the ideological background was anarchism. The three leading members of the magazine, Hwang, Choi and Kim, were greatly steeped in anarchism. Kim Uyk spreaded Esperanto, the language of the anarchists, and introduced the anarchistic artist, Oscar Wild, into Korea. Paying great attention to the free verse which is the typical literary form to express the absolute freedom of the individual, Kim Uyk and Hwang Suk-Woo tried to organize the theory of the free verse. Choi Seung-Gu inquired into the modern art, exchanging thoughts with anarchists such as Na Kyung-Suk, Oski Sakaoe(大杉榮) and etc. and wrote poems. The Modern Thoughts came to revive in the form of The Ruins in 1920.
