이 논문은 이광수가 1910년부터 1918년까지 쓴 단편소설을 대상으로 하여 근대 초기의 묘사문장의 유형과 기능이 어떠했는지를 연구한 것이다. 근대사회는 새로운 세계관이나 사유의 틀을 요구했고, 근대소설은 새로운 문예사조를 매개로 창작 기법이나 세계관의 변화를 담는 장르가 되었다. 따라서 이광수가 시도한 구체적이고 사실적인 묘사문장은 근대의 새로운 기법이자 세계관의 표출이라는 것이 서론의 전제이다. 본론에서는 초기 단편소설에 나타난 묘사문장들을 시간, 공간, 인물, 자연이라는 네 영역으로 나누어 유형화한 다음, 그 유형들이 소설의 구성에서 어떤 기능을 하는지 고찰하였다. 결과적으로 근대적 시간묘사는 밤 시간의 감각적 묘사유형과 근대적 서사의 확대 기능, 시간의 주관적 묘사유형과 서사 시간의 속도 조절 기능으로, 근대적 공간묘사는 이국적 공간의 묘사유형과 근대적 서사 공간의 전경화 기능, 공간의 주관적 묘사유형과 서술자와 인물의 어조 통일 기능으로, 근대적 인물묘사는 인물의 비교 대조 묘사 유형과 인물 주도형 서사 기능, 인물의 다층적 관찰묘사 유형과 근대적 개인의 개별성 부각 기능으로, 근대적 자연묘사는 자연의 반복 묘사 유형과 서사단위의 진출입 기능, 자연의 변주 묘사 유형과 심리의 상징적 대리 기능으로 집약되었다. 이광수 이후의 작가들이 어떤 묘사문장을 통해 그들의 미의식을 드러냈는지는 후속연구로 남긴다.

This study aims at investigating types and functions of description in the early short stories written by Lee, Gwang-Soo around the time when he has finished the first modern novel titled 「Moojeong」. He tried to exercise and create new types of descriptive sentences at that time. And the new modern descriptions were related to modern aesthetic distinctions and ways of thinking. It was to be classified into four objects, that is to say, description of time, space, character and nature. What this study found in result are two phases in brief. Firstly the types of descriptions are describing evening and night sensitively, describing time subjectively, describing exotic space, describing space subjectively, describing characters comparatively, describing one character from different viewpoints, describing nature repeatedly and describing nature in a series of variation. Secondly the functions of the descriptive types are magnifying modern narrative, handling narrative speed, standing out modern narrative space, being identical narrator and character, character leading narrative, focusing on modern individual, sign dividing narrative units and acting as substitute for describing mentality. I hope this study would be based on the next studies investigating modern aesthetic sentences and ways of thinking comparing to the other novelists.
