이 글은 「운수 좋은 날」의 연원을 작가 현진건의 번역 체험과 접목시켜 분석하였다. 그 과정에서 현진건 단편의 창작 단계를 새롭게 구분하였으며, 「운수 좋은날」이 나온 시기의 특징을 고구하여 현진건의 독서와 번역이 창작과 연동되는 양상을 살폈다. 이어서 「운수 좋은 날」의 구체적 참조 대상으로서 번역소설 「나들이」를 제시하였다. 「나들이」는 1923년 현진건에 의해 직접 『동명』에 역재(譯載)된 프랑스 작가 뤼시앙 데카브(Lucien Descaves)의 소설로서, 서사구조와 제재, 주제, 정서, 기교적 측면에서 「운수 좋은 날」에 모티브를 제공했다는 것이 이 글의 핵심 주장이다. 아울러 현재 고평되는 「운수 좋은 날」의 미덕은 대부분 현진건이 부여한 차별화 지점, 즉 `조선적인 것`에 집중되어 있었음을 함께 논의하였다.

This study has analyzed the origin of Unsu joeun nal(A Lucky Day) in connection with the writer Hyun Jin-geon`s translation experience. In the process, the stages of Hyun Jin-geon(玄鎭健)`s short-story creation have newly been classified, and the characteristics of the period when Unsu joeun nal was published have been investigated, thereby looking into the aspects of Hyun Jin-geon`s reading and translation being associated with his writing. Then, Nadeuri, a translated short story, has been presented as a specific reference for Unsu joeun nal. The Nadeuri is a French writer Lucien Descaves` short story translated by Hyun Jin-geon and published in magazine Dongmyeong in 1923. The central argument of the present paper is that Nadeuri provided a motive to Unsu joeun nal in terms of narrative structure, subject matter, theme, emotion, and technique. In addition, it has been discussed that the virtues of Unsu joeun nal, which hold a high reputation, mostly focused on points of differentiation made by Hyun Jin-geon, that is, `what are characteristic of Joseon.`
