「열쇠」(은희경), 「월경」(천운영), 「스카이 콩콩」(김애란)의 주체 위기가 대상-어머니의 상실과 깊은 관련이 있다는 점에 초점을 맞추어 위기의 양상과 소설적 대응방식을 살펴보았다. 주체의 위기와 관련하여 `아버지 부재`라는 오랜 화두가 있지만, 세 소설이 상실에 대응하는 방법을 남근 위주의 질서에 따라 말할 때 그 내부에서 해명되지 않는 의구심들이 남게 된다. 대상-어머니의 상실이 상징적 기표로서의 아버지에 이르는 주체화 과정에 중요한 역할을 미치고 있음에 주목하고, 주체의 위기는 대상-아버지관계로만 볼 것이 아니라 어머니와 아버지에 이르는 대상관계의 `변천과 왕래`라는 보다 넓은 관점으로 조명될 필요가 있다. 「열쇠」의 나르시시즘적 자아와 「월경」의 불안정한 젠더 정체성과 「스카이 콩콩」의 상징적 환상은 어머니의 상실을 중심으로 한 위기에 대응하는 주체의 태도와 관련이 있다. `열쇠 찾기`, `월경하기`, `환상하기`가 성장하기의 키워드가 된다. 「열쇠」와 「월경」은 망상-분열적 위치의 영향 아래 있으면서도 `열쇠 찾기`(「열쇠」)에 비해 `월경하기`(「월경」)는 에로스의 탄력(`환한 달빛`)을 받는다는 점에서 경계에 대한 천착과 에로스의 응원을 함축하고 있다. 「스카이 콩콩」은 우울적 위치에 있음을 보여주는데, 창조적 승화를 통해 가족과 삶과 성장의 의미를 발견하고 사랑과 연민의 정서를 준비하는 것이다. 세 소설이 상실에 대응하는 방법은 망상-분열적 위치와 우울적 위치를 양 끝으로 하는 연속적이고 점진적인 스펙트럼으로 펼쳐진다. 이는 1990년대와 2000년대 초반의 대응방식에 대한 서사 미학적 변화와 차이에 대해 유형화의 가능성과 명명화의 가능성을 열어준다. 이는 후고의 몫이다.
