어린이 문학은 모든 어린이들에게 즐거운 장르적 체험을 안겨준다. 어린이 문학 속의 여러 이야기는 어린이가 이 세상을 다양하게 경험하도록 한다. 어린이 문학의 독서 체험에서 남아는 남성성에 대한 이미지를 규정받고, 여아 는 여성성에 대한 이미지를 규정받는다. 이 때 남성성과 여성성이란 사회적 변화에 따라 일정한 기능 변화를 동반한다. 본고에서는 전통 사회에서 현대 사회에 이르기까지 남성성의 변모가 어린이 문학 안에서 어떻게 전개되어 왔는가를 각각의 작품 분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 본론에서는 전근대, 근대, 탈근대로 변화되는 과정에서 남성상이 어떻게 변모하게 되었는가를 밝히고 있다. 남성상의 변화란 어린이 문학 작품에서 나타나는 남성 이미지를 유형화하는 과정에서 드러날 수 있다. 이를 위해 어린이 문학에 나타난 전통적인 남성상, 근대적인 남성상, 탈근대적인 남성상의 특성이 각각 어떻게 드러나며 차별화 되는지를 분석하였다. 사회학적으로 남성상의 변화는 강인함에서 부드러움으로 변화되어 갔다. 어린이 문학 작품에서 전근대적 남성 이미지는 아비 부재의 현실 속에서 강 인한 남성적 모험을 감행하거나, 어머니 둥지로부터 강력한 이탈의 충동과 모험을 감행하는 것으로 재현되었다. 근대적인 남성 이미지는 남성간의 우정을 동성사회적 욕망의 실현으로 재현해 내거나, 아버지의 세계를 권위에서 사랑의 주제로 재현함으로써 남성성에 감성의 철학을 가미시켰다. 탈근대적 인 남성 이미지는 남성 육체와 정신에 대한 고정관념으로부터 자유로운 모습을 재현해 내거나, 성별 특성을 초월한 자율적인 인간상을 제시함으로써 현 대 사회에 적합한 이상적인 남성성을 제시해 주고 있었다. 어린이 문학 속에 나타난 남성의 이미지가 전통에서 현대에 이르기까지 많은 변화를 보이는 것 은 우리 사회의 단면을 말하는 것이기도 하다. 현대 어린이 문학 작품에서 이상적인 주인공이 탄생될 수 있도록 다양한 창작과 이론적 접근이 수반되어야 할 것이다.

Children`s literature gives joyful genre experiences to all children. Through many stories in children`s literature, children experience the world in various ways. In reading of children`s literature, male children are imbued with masculinity and female children are with femininity. Here, masculinity and femininity are accompanied with certain functional changes resulting from social transitions. The present study analyzed how masculinity has been developed in children`s literature through history from traditional society to contemporary one. The main purpose of the study is to identify changes in men`s image in the course of transition from pre-modern to modern and post-modern age. Changes in men`s image can be found in the process of defining the patterns of men`s image in children`s literature. For this, we analyzed how the characteristics of traditional men`s image, modern men`s image and post-modern men`s image observed in children`s literature were manifested and distinguished. Sociologically, men`s image has evolved from toughness to softness. As the strong and curious masculine nature experienced gradual change through the growth of male children, it was necessary to prepare appropriate environment in accord to the stage of change. For this, there must be overall change in the rearing attitude and rearing role of the mother, who is a woman, and the father, who is a man. When the father is involved adequately and actively in child rearing, we can expect ideal men and women transcending gender. This will be the ultimate image of human beings demanded in this generation.
