This thesis is to describe, the background and significance found during the process of Japanese translation of “Aeongakbi,” a Korean classic book by the productive writer Dasan Jeong Yakyong, by Hosoi Hajime (1888∼1934) during his visit and activities in Korea. Hosoi was a well-known Japanese in Korea during the Japanese occupation period, as a journalist, publishing activist, Korean researcher, and others. After Japan-Korea Treaty of 1910 was reached following Eul Sa Neuk Yak, he founded the < Joseon Research Group > to commemorate the Korea-Japan Annexation, showed interest in Korean classic books publication, and actively participated in Korea colonization activities. In 1919, when the great March 1st independence movement took place, finally set up the publishing company, < Freedom Discussion Society >, and published total 12 volumes of < Popular Korean Literature Archive >, as planning publications, as part of full scale practical movement for the purpose of absorption. Among those, written by Dasan Jeong Yakyong, < Aeongakbi > and Janghwa Hongryeon jeon were together published as volume 10, translated in Japanese version. Through Japanese translation of Aeongakbi, Hosoi discovered Dasan Jeong Yakyong from a new angle, and praised him as a great scholar who can be compared with the pioneer achievements of Arai Hakuseki of Japan. In addition, “Aeongakbi” that deals with details regarding proper use of objects` names and Chinese characters, was more appealing to Hosoi, and finally he published a Japanese translation fighting an endemic disease called “Dabokpung,” while travelling in China. Until “Aeongakbi” was selected as a translation subject, attention was paid to copy of “Jang, Ji Yeon” < Kwangmunsa >, newspaper article and series of Hwangseong Sinmun, Aeongakbi of “Joseon-gunseodaegye,” and other books of Dasan on a booklist of “Joseongoseojinseo” and through such process, “Aeongakbi” translation project was launched. Hosoi excluded Item 53 with the strong tone of Joseon among details suggested in original copy of “Aeongakbi” because he engaged in the translation work as part of construction of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere under the assumption of “Dongyangilgaron” that can achieve untied Chinese culture community based on Chinese character used in Joseon, Chine, and Japan. He thought that miscommunications of Korea, China and Japan can be resolved easily by organizing neatly the Chinese characters used differently for each and ones used commonly, eventually leading to realization of “Dongyangilgaron” making up a Chinese character based community. As such, Hosoi was a faithful worker as civilian for the strategy of Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere to create a colony of the empire of Japan.
