필자는 이 글에서 세 가지의 논점을 두고 2000년대 이후의 `한국고전문학전집 의 수요와 방향`에 대해 논하였다. 첫째, 청소년, 아동 독자를 염두에 두고 출판된 `우리고전 시리즈`에 대한 평가이다. 둘째, 대학생들에게 교양의 함양을 목적으로 제정된 `교양도서 목록`에 포함된 `한국고전문학` 목록의 가치와 영향력에 대한 평가이다. 셋째, 현재 독서시장에서 유통되고 있는 『한국고전문학전집』에 대한 평가이다. 현암사, 창비, 나라말 등의 출판사는 2000년 이후 중고등학생층의 지적 수준 과 흥미를 고려하여 `쉽고 재미있는` 우리고전 시리즈를 간행하기 시작했다. 이 시리즈들은 고소설 위주의 대중성 있는 목록 선정, 가독성 있는 문장으로 다시쓰기, 다양한 편집기술 발휘 등의 방식으로 상업적 출판을 성공적으로 이끌었다. 이 책들은 유소년 독자층에까지 대상을 넓혀 `대중성`과 `교양`이라는 고전문학 전집의 가치를 실현하고 있다. 현재 대학생을 위한 한국고전문학은 유명 출판사에서 출판한 전집보다는 `권장도서 목록`을 통해서 영향력을 발휘하고 있다. 2005년 서울대에서 제정한 권장도서 목록은 대학마다 목록의 변주와 학생들의 개별적 독서를 통해 `교양`과 종합적 판단력과 비판적 사고력을 실현할 것을 기대받고 있다. 구체적으로 목록을 검토하며 각 한국고전문학 작품들에 어떠한 교양성이 내재되었는지, 독서와 토론을 통해 어떤 점을 성찰할 수 있는지에 대해서 연구자와 담당 교수들이 연 구할 필요가 있다. 문학동네에서는 고려대 민족문화연구원에서 2006년 중단한 『한국고전문학전 집』을 계승하여, 2010년부터 새롭게 한국고전문학전집을 간행하고 있다. 전집의 중심은 소설과 한문산문이다. 이 출판사에서는 학술적 성격에 초점을 두면서도 독서대중과 소통하기 위해 다양한 편집방향을 취하였다. 앞으로의 고전문학전집 출간 방향에 대해 필자는 첫째, 교양에 대한 인식과 새로운 작품의 발굴, 둘째, 원문 표현의 존중과 가독성 있는 번역 및 현대역(다시쓰기), 셋째, 다양한 편집방식 활용(주석, 해설, 이미지 자료 등) 등을 전망한다.

This research aims to suggest three points about `the demands and direction of the Collections of Korean Classical Literature` after millennial years; First, the comments about `series Korean classical works` which kept the middle and high school readers in mind, second, the comments about the value and influence of the `Korean Classic Works of Literature` list which are included in `the list of the liberal arts books` for undergraduates, and third, the comments about the direction of The Collections of Korean Classical Literature(Munhak Dongne; Literature Village) which is in circulation at the book markets. Publishing companies like Hyunamsa, Changbi, Naramal and etc have been publishing easy and funny `series of our Korean classical works` considering the intellectual ability and interests of the millennial generation. These series successfully lead commercial publishment, to choose the popular list oriented ancient novels, revise the contents of most classical literary collection writings in more fun and more understandable way. These books make us realize the virtue of collections of Korean classical literature for teenager readers to be `popularity` and `liberal arts`. Today`s Korean classical literature works for undergraduates have more power through `recommended book list for undergraduates` than collection published by famous publishing company. The authoritative classic literature list for undergraduates spreads to other universities and delivers new lists. This list of recommended book is expected to realize critic ability to think and overall judgement through variation of the list by each universities and student`s individual reading. Munhak Dongne editors have been publishing the collection of Korean classical literature from 2010. This publishing company focus to communicate with reading audience keeping their academic degree. Most of the literary collection include novel and Chinese prose. This collection is widening class of readers through choosing new work, coexistence between readable original and today`s, deep explanatory notes and various method of explanation pages.
