1930년대의 독서는 대중적 책읽기가 자리매김한 시기이다. 대중들은 `취미`로서의 책읽기를 선호했고, 산업화된 신문과 잡지매체들은 대중의 흥미를 유발할 수 있는 읽을거리에 지면을 할애했다. 근대적 독서가 대중들에게 지지를 얻을 수 있는 장르, 즉 대중소설을 통해 이루어진 것이다. 특히 `탐정`이나 추리소설은 대중 들의 호응이 높은 장르 중 하나였고, 국내에서도 본격적으로 창작된 작품들이 발표되었다. 박태원 역시 추리소설에 대한 관심을 추리물 창작으로까지 확대시켰다. 추리 소설의 번역 및 번안과 함께 직접 추리소설을 창작하기도 했다. 모험담을 기반으로 하는 아동·청소년 문학이나 탐정 추리물 주로 발표했다. 박태원은 이후 발표된 『금은탑』의 서술방식을 추리기법으로 활용하기도 했다. 박태원의 추리소설은 신문과 잡지에 연재한 것으로, 삽화와 함께 지면에 실렸다. 특히 박태원의 삽화는 장르별 특징을 세밀하게 표현했던 삽화가 정현웅이 담당했다. 삽화는 작품과 독자와의 거리를 텍스트의 시각화를 통해 긴밀하게 만 드는 역할을 담당한다. 게다가 박태원 소설의 서사는 모더니즘 성향의 한 방향 성과 맞닿아 있다. 따라서 박태원의 추리소설은 소설의 의미나 그 특징을 살피는 문학적 논의에만 머물 것이 아니라, 삽화와 같은 비문학적 논의로까지 확산 될 필요가 있다고 판단되었고, 박태원 추리소설과 정현웅의 삽화의 경향성을 살 피는 작업을 진행하였다.

The spread of newspapers and magazines activated production of popular novels. In 1930s, as the number of sold copies of newspapers and magazines was connected with the popularity of serial novels, popular novels in diverse genres that would attract the public were written. However, because popular novels set commercialism forth as a premise, and are produced for fun or amusement, they are perceived as a conflict clause for pure novels. They have been writings pitted against a literary value of craftsmanship and treated as the target of criticism from writers and critics. In spite of these negative perceptions, back in 1930s, there were various popular novels written. In particular, Park Tae-won criticized these depreciations of such works, adding that the attitude of critics towards popular novels was prejudice. This perception brought Park Tae-won to write and present popular novels ranging from history and mystery novels to translated and adapted novels. Recently while there are discussions on Park Tae-won regarding the genres of his popular novels, it is true that they mostly focused on his history novels and vulgarity. Thus, this study pays attention to his mystery novels. Especially, it is true that there hasn`t been any discussion regarding the relation between his mystery novels and cut-ins of illustration. Popular novels are productions setting up readers as a multitude of the public. Accordingly, illustrations are in charge of playing a role of keeping readers close to works through visualization. Park Tae-won`s mystery novels can be divided into pure creative works and translated and adapted novels, and all illustrations in his novels were drawn by Jeong Hyeon-ung. Eventually, to examine illustrations of Park Tae-won`s mystery novels is to explore the popularity relational aspects of visualization of illustrations that mystery novels have as well as propensities of Park Tae-won`s mystery novel production.
