영화 <왕의 남자>는 희곡 「이」와 같은 스토리 라인을 가지고 있기는 하나 그 정치성에 있어 많은 차이점을 보이고 있다. 이 글에서는 두 작품에서 정치성이라는 것이 어떻게 각각의 장르적 특성에 맞게 드러나고 있는가를 분석하고자 했다. 먼저 내러티브상으로 볼 때 어떤 변화가 있는지를 보기 위해 인물의 성격전환과 대중적 전환 방식을 분석했다. 세 명의 주요인물, 곧 공길과 장생, 연산의 정치성은 희곡에서 훨씬 강하고 직접적으로 드러나는 반면 영화에서는 순화 혹은 약화된 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 그 이유는 결국 더 많은 대중을 상대해야만 하는 영화 매체의 특성에서 찾을 수 있을 터이다. 하지만 영화에서는 성정치학적으로 한국 사회에서 여전히 금기시되어 왔던 동성애적 코드가 오히려 강화되었으며 대중의 반응을 볼 때 뚜렷한 거부감 없이 받아들여졌다. 또한 희곡에서는 대사로 처리된 갑자사화 등의 정치적 사건이 영화에서는 극화되거나 예술과 정치권력의 대립을 보여주기 위해 역동적인 사냥터 장면 등이 삽입되는 등, 영화는 영화적 특성을 활용하여 대중들의 이해도를 높여 결과적으로는 희곡이 담고 있는 정치성을 그대로 간직할 뿐 아니라 오히려 희곡이 전달하고자 했던 정치적 요소들을 더욱 잘 표현했다고 보여진다. 한편 희곡과 영화에서 두드러지게 다른 점은 공간 활용이다. 희곡에서는 모든 사건을 궁 안에서 진행시켜 그 공간의 폐쇄성으로 인해 정치적 긴장감을 극대화시킨 반면 영화는 궁 밖의 공간도 자유롭게 활용하면서 대신 카메라의 이동 방식과 각도 조절을 통해 궁이라는 공간을 폐쇄적으로 표현하고 더불어 등장인물들의 권력 관계를 효율적으로 제시해 주고 있다.

The film < The Royal Jester > has a same story with a play 「Yi」, but it shows a lot of differences by presenting political elements. This paper aims to analyze how differently the film and the play express political elements according to its own property. First of all, the change of characters and the popular transformation are analyzed to show in the change of a narrative. The political character of Gong-gil, Chang-seng and the King Yeon-san in the film looks like becoming weaker than in a play. The reason for the weakening could be found in the populistic character of a medium of film. But in a film homosexuality has been shown much more stronger than in a play and korean audiences didn`t reject it. Homosexuality in itself has a strong political character, because korean society politically excludes homosexuality. Homosexuality is regarded as threat to the capitalism. It is a kind of a progress in a korean society which is still conservative regarding homosexuality. Furthermore, the historic occurrence like Gapjasawha which is just mentioned in a play is dramatized in a film as well as hunting clowns which is for exposing the drastic conflict between clowns and political power. In a word, such kind of change is aimed to let people understand political elements by using filmic expressions. As a result, the film < The Royal Jester > has still kept the political elements of the play 「Yi」 and expressed them even much better in a way. Another difference can be found in a using space. Everything happens in a palace in a play 「Yi」, while other places also could be shown in a film < The Royal Jester >. The play tried to maximize political tension by confining all the people in a palace. The film used not just a palace, but also other places as space for the story, but it presented also the political tension efficiently by using camera moving and angle variously.
