본 연구는 표현 언어 발달의 지표이며 언어 능력 진단 및 평가 기준의 하나인 평균발화길이(MLU)에 대한 기초적인 분석 결과를 제공하고, MLU와 연령 및 성별 요인과의 상관관계를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 5세에서 19세까지의 정상 발달 아동과 청소년을 대상으로 자발적 대화를 통해 얻은 언어 샘플을 각 피험자별로 분석하였다. 그리고 연령 및 성별 요인이 MLU와 어떤 관련을 갖는지를 알아보기 위하여 연령별·성별 MLU 평균과 표준편차를 구하고 다중회귀분석을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 연령과 MLU 사이에 유의한 양적 선형 관계가 관찰되었고, 그러한 선형 관계는 몇몇 선행 연구들의 주장과 달리 9세 이후에도 유지되는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 MLU의 증가 폭은 연령 수준에 따라 다르게 나타나므로 별도의 회귀식이 적용되어야 함을 알 수 있었다. 성별 요인의 경우 연령에 비해서는 그 중요도가 다소 떨어지지만 역시 유의한 영향을 미치므로, 연령별 MLU 값을 예측하는 경우 성별을 고려하면 예측도를 높일 수 있다. 본 연구의 분석에서 제외된 20세 이상 화자의 MLU 분석 및 MLU와 다른 언어적 요인과의 관련성에 대한 분석은 차후 과제로 남겨 둔다.

This study serves as a preliminary investigation into how mean length of utterance(MLU) relates to both age and gender of speakers. We investigated MLU in a group of 1,959 typically-developing children and juveniles, ages 5-19 years. We analyzed each subject`s MLU and its relevance with speaker`s age and gender. Multiple regression was conducted to explore the extent to which each variable was related to MLU independent. Results of this study can be summarized as follows: (1) MLU increased with the growth of age but the rate of increase diminished after the age of 9 years. (2) MLU in female group was higher than male group. (3) The multiple regression analysis has shown that age is more important in estimating variance in MLU than gender. The result of this study will contribute to the common use of MLU as a diagnostic measure.
