이 글은 <변강쇠가>의 후반부 이해를 위해 아주 중요한 인물인 뎁득이에 대한 연구이다. 뎁득이는 말뚝이의 형상을 지닌 인물로 외모는 물론 신분, 성격, 작중 역할 등에 있어서 `판소리에 초대된 말뚝이`라고 할 만 하다. 둘째, 뎁득이는 후반부에 등장하는 다른 인물들과는 질적으로 다른데, 특히 자신의 목소리를 가지고 옹녀와 `관계`를 만들어 간다는 점에서 그러하다. 또 그는 옹녀에 대한 욕망뿐 아니라 강쇠에 대한 두려움을 동시에 가지고 있어서 그들 둘 사이에 자신을 위치 지운다. 셋째, 뎁득이는 `서사화된 말뚝이`의 형상으로 작품 내에서 자신의 독특한 역할을 수행한다. 그는 작중에서 수용자들이 자신과 동일시할 수 있는 유일하게 긍정적인 존재이다. 또 그는 작품을 관통하는 강쇠와 옹녀의 비극적 대립을 인식하는 유일한 인물이라는 점에서도 수용자와 비슷한 입지를 지닌다. 이런 특성 때문에 작자는 뎁득이를 설정된 화자이자 설정된 청자로 활용해서 독특하고 난해한 이 작품을 정리·해명하여 청중들과 공유하는 길을 만들 수 있다.

This article is the analysis of Depdgi who plays important role in the last part of Byeonggangsoi-ga(歌). He looks like Malddugi. He can be said as `Malddugi invited to Pansori` for the perspective of status, characteristics and roles as well as appearances. Second, he is totally different from the figures in the last half of the story, in that he makes a `relationship` with Ongnyeo with his own voice. He finds his position between Ongnyeo and Gangsoi because he has sexual desire for Ongnyeo as well as fear for Gangsoi. Third, he plays unique role in the play with the figure of `Malddugi in Epic". He is the only positive figure whom the accommodators(audiences) can assimilate themselves with. He has similar stance of the accommodators in that he recognizes the tragic confrontation of Gangsoi and Ongnyeo throughout the play. Because of these characteristics, the writer makes use of Depdgi as a narrator and listener to align it to make an easier story for the resonance with the audience.
