이별은 예로부터 문학예술의 중요한 제재였다. 이별의 양상은 시간과 공간에 따라 다르게 나타난다. 본고에서는 이별을 사별(死別)과 생이별(生離別), 그리고 심미적으로 법식화된 이별로 크게 나누어 보고, 그것이 문학사 속에서 어떠한 층위로 존재해 왔는지를 살펴보았다. 전근대시대 생활공동체에서 이별은 주로 사별을 의미했는데, 근대적 문물과 제도로 인해 생이별이 발생하게 되는 양상을 정선아라리를 통해 살펴보았다. 고전시가에서 만남과 이별을 흥(興)과 예(藝 또는 禮)의 수준으로 심미화·양식화하는 데 있어서 사회적 특수계층인 기녀(妓女)의 역할을 지적하였다. 근대 이전에 제한적으로 존재해 왔던 생이별이 근대와 함께 계층과 성별, 연령, 지역을 초월하여 전면화 되었으며, 생이별로 인한 정서적 고통이 근대적 인간의 정체성을 형성하는 요인이 되었다. 초기 근대시는 이별을 양식화하고 심미화하는 과정을 통해 그 형성의 기틀을 마련하였다. 애국계몽기의 시가, 주요한, 김소월, 한용운 등의 시에서 이별을 근대 체험의 중요한 요인으로 수용하고 이를 바탕으로 개성적인 서정 양식을 창조해 나가는 과정을 고찰하였다.
The Korean modern poetry set up its formative basis in 1920s in the process of giving patterns and aesthetical meanings to the separation between men and women. Such poets as Ju Yo-Han, Kim So-Wol, Han Yong-Woon delved into "the undescribable yearning for the absent Nim(lover)" as their poetic theme and contributed to establishing stable forms and lyricism of the Korean modern poetry. The separation has been a very important literary material from old times, but showed varied features according to time and space. This study divided the separation into three types: separation by death, socially-enforced separation and aesthetically-patterned separation, and examined what layer it has taken in the literary history. In premodern days most separations were caused by death, but Jeongsun Arari contained the separation enforced by modern civilization and systems. The classical poetry showed that Gisaeng(singing and dancing girl), a special social class, played an absolute role in enhancing the meeting and separation to the dimension of aesthetic amusement and artistic value. The few enforced separations of the premodern days came to appear extensively regardless of social classes, sex, age and regions as the modern age began. The emotional anguish caused by enforced separation became one of the elements of modern men`s identity. The modern poetry in the formative stage attempted to deal with the separation and create beauty and lyricism. By handling the separation as an important poetic theme, the modern poetry could acquire a new form of lyricism.
