이 글은 『긔독신보』에 실린 기독교 소설에 나타난 만주 표상에 대한 연구이다. 최근 들어 근·현대 소설에 나타난 만주를 다룬 연구는 다수 제출되고 있다. 『긔독신보』는 식민지 시기에 창간된 신문으로서 `기독교 민족주의` 이념을 담았다. 『긔독신보』에 실린 소설도 이러한 이념적 색채를 띠고 있다. 따라서 『긔독신보』 소재 소설의 만주 표상은 기존의 소설에 나타난 그것과 차이가 있다. 이 글에서 살펴본 작품은 모두 네 작품이다. 김두식의 『이역의 춘몽』(1918)부터 시작하여, 임영빈의 「해후」(1924), 이영작의 「세 출발」(1929), 방인근의 『무명조의 노래』(1932)가 그것이다. 각 소설의 주제는 다르다. 그러나 각 소설의 만주 표상은 비슷한 계열로 상징화되었다. 그 표상은 당시 다른 소설과 비슷하면서도 다르다. 만주는 조선으로부터 탈출구라는 점에서 당시 다른 소설의 만주표상과 비슷하며 비적의 창궐, 아편 중독, 주색 잡기 등으로 속악한 타락의 공간이다. 다른 점은 기독교적 상상력에 바탕한 공간 배치로부터 비롯된다. 『긔독신보』 소재 소설은 `만주-조선`을 `애급-이스라엘`로 배열하여 바라본다. 조선은 힘이 약한 민족이며 주변 강국의 식민 지배를 받는다는 점에서 이스라엘로 상징화되었다. 만주는 기회의 땅이자 타락의 공간이라는 점에서 애급으로 상징화되었다. 『긔독신보』 지면에서도 이러한 상징은 자주 찾아볼 수 있는데 그것이 소설에도 반영된 것이다. 『긔독신보』 소설에서 만주는 등장인물이 고난당하는 곳이며 비참해지는 공간이다. 그에 비해 조선은 기독교 신앙이 잉태되는 공간이다. 『긔독신보』는 민족이 살길을 기독교 신앙아래 모색하면서도 기독교 신앙으로 민족의 차이와 계급의 차이를 극복할 수 있는 가능성도 살폈다.

This is a study about the representation of Manchuria in the Christian fiction published in The Christian messenger. In recent time, many researchers have been studied about Manchuria in modern novel. The Christian messenger was founded during the colonial period and communicated Christian Nationalism to readers. Novels published in The Christian messenger were also these ideological hues. Therefore this was reflected in the Manchurian representations of novel in The Christian messenger. There are four works in this newspaper. They are A spring dream of a foreign country(1918) by Kim, du-sik, Reunion(1924) by Im, young-bin, Three departure(1929) by Lee, young-jak and The silent bird(1932) by Bang, in-keun. These novels are different. However, the representations of Manchuria in these novels are similar. First of all, Manchuria was the emergency exits from Chosun, which was similar with other novels at that times. And Manchuria is a corrupt space like a rage on bandit, opiumism, and wine. Different points come from space layouts based on christian imagination. The relation of `Manchuria-Chosun` is similar to `Egypt-Israel`. Chosun is weak, ruled by surrounding power nation, which is symbolized by Israel.
