이 연구는 게르하르트 하우프트만의 희곡 「외로운 사람들」을 문화번역한 김명순의 세 편의 소설 「돌아다볼 때」 초고본, 「외로운 사람들」, 「돌아다볼 때」 개고본을 분석함으로써, 한국 근대문학의 중층성과 `복수의 근대`라는 이형태들을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 20세기 전환기에 `하우프트만주의`는 유럽, 북미, 아시아, 그리고 조선에 이르기까지 전 지구적 반향을 일으킨다. 김명순은 하우프트만의 원본에서 당대 조선의 자유연애에 필연적으로 수반되는 삼각관계의 문제를 포착하여, 젠더의 전치와 도치로써 원본을 `대리보충`한다. 또한, 일대일 관계의 자유연애가 불가능한 당대 현실을 인식하고서, 섹슈얼리티가 배제된 정신적, 관념적, 이상적 연애를 추구한다. 그러나 이 또한 실현 불가능하다. 이러한 자유연애의 불가능성, 이상적 연애의 불가능성은 결국 번역의 실패로 귀결되는데, 이는 `번역의 불가능성`을 전제하는 `이언어적 말 걸기`이자 `번역가의 책무`의 수행이라 해석할 수 있을 것이다.

This study aims to understand the multilayered quality of modern Korean literature and the variant forms of “multiple modernities” therein by analyzing the following three novel versions by Kim Myeong-Soon of the cultural translation of Einsame Menschen, originally written by Gerhart Hauptmann: the first draft, “When I Look Back”; “Lonely Lives”; and the corrected version of “When I Look Back.” At the time, Kim Myeong-Soon, who was focusing on love triangles, which were indispensable to the “Free Love” relationships in contemporary Chosun, tried to find substitutes for and replenish the Hauptmann`s original version by means of transposition and the inversion of gender identity. Recognizing that “Free Love” based on monogamy might not be possible at that time, Kim pursued platonic, notional, and idealistic relationships. However, such idealistic relationships met with failure, as well. In conclusion, Kim`s trial is regarded as a “heterolingual address,” which is performative and implies the impossibility of translation and the “Aufgabe” of a translator.
