이 연구는 김광식의 『植民地』를 중심으로 학병 기피자들의 시대 응전 방식과 내면의식을 추적해 보고, 그들이 어떤 식으로 정체성을 형성해 가고 있는지를 밝혀내는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 먼저, 『學兵』, 『新天地』에 실려 있는 학병 거부자들의 서사를 대상으로 수기에 나타난 학병 거부자들의 내면의식과 그들의 논리를 분석해 보았다. 학병 거부자들은 학병 지원자들에 대한 동정과 도덕적 우월감을 표출하는 방식으로 학병 체험을 서사화 하고 있었다. 한편, 소설의 경우는 소설의 허구적 장치를 통해 학병의 문제를 정면으로 응시하여 그간 학병 거부자들의 수기에서 형성된 `민족 투사` 혹은 `영웅`의 이미지를 거둬내고 있다. 『植民地』에서 드러나는 학병 거부자의 자의식은 민족적 저항의식의 실천이 결여되어 있었다는 의식과 그러한 상황에서 자신들도 소극적이나마 저항을 했다는 양가적인 의식이 충돌하는 형태를 띠고 있다. 아울러 이 작품은 학병 문제와 식민지 공간에서 혼종적으로 존재했던 주체들의 불안을 되짚어봄으로써 역사적, 심리적 회복을 시도하고, 이러한 일련의 과정을 통해 자신의 역사를 재구축하여 정체성을 회복하는 데까지 나아가고 있다.

The purpose of this study is to trace the ways of tracking the response times of student soldier dodgers and their inner awareness in Kim Kwang-sik`s “The Colony” and understand how they form their identity in any case. For this purpose, the study first analyzes the logic of the “inner consciousness” described in the memoirs and narratives of the target student soldier dodgers listed as “student soldier” and “Shincheonji.” Student soldier objectors narrated experiences involving student soldiers in a way that expressed their sympathy and moral superiority to student soldier applicants. On the other hand, if the novel presents the issue to student soldiers through fictional devices out of a novel reap a “nation champion `or the image of a hero is defined in the memoirs of student soldiers whilst objectors. The self-consciousness of student soldier dodgers is revealed in “The Colony” as a form of mental conflict since their passive resistance in such circumstances implies a lack of national consciousness. In addition, this work continues to depict how these soldiers recovered by rebuilding their identity, traces the student soldiers` anxiety regarding the colonies, and tries to address their historical and psychological recovery through several processes.
