The novel “Umaeng” receives special attention for being the first novel written by Son, Chang-Seop after his move to Japan. It is an autobiographical fiction in a newspaper and contains personal identity and national agony.[A2] It is widely acclaimed as the author`s masterpiece. Due to its autobiographical contents, “Umaeng” is very important in any study on the writer. Moreover, the subject of the novel expresses not only a personal opinion or suggestion but also serious concerns about ethnicity. The interesting features of “Umaeng” are its first-person narrative, juxtaposition of present with past, and depiction of the generation gap among Koreans living in Japan. In this novel, Son, Chang-Seop`s nationalist sentiments and perception of hometown can be observed. Through “Umaeng,” the writer expresses his mental agony of moving to Japan. Therefore, in studies on Son, Chang-Seop`s novels, “Umaeng” is very important.
