본 연구는 학습자의 유음 /ㄹ/ 습득 과정에서 보이는 변이의 양상을 과제 유형과 숙달도에 따라 고찰하는 데 목적이 있다. 한국어의 유음은 음성 환경에 따라 설측음 [l]과 탄설음 [□]의 변이음을 가진다. 따라서 학습자의 과제는 유음의 두변이음을 관찰할 수 있도록 설계한 후, 형식적 과제(단어 목록 읽기, 문장 읽기)와 비형식적 과제(자유 발화)로 다국적 학습자의 음성을 분석하였다. 분석 결과 학습자는 과제의 유형에 따라 숙달도별로 정확도에 차이를 보였다. 학습자가 형태에 집중하는 과제일수록 정확성이 높았다. 숙달도에 따른 유음의 정확도는 중급학습자가 가장 저조하며 초급과 고급 학습자는 비슷한 수준을 보였다. 이 결과는 언어 습득 과정에서 중급 수준의 학습자에게서 발생하는 체계적인 오류가 습득으로 이어진다는 중간언어의 양상과 유사하다. 그러나 비형식적 과제에서는 숙달도와 무관하게 오류가 관찰되어 중간언어의 패턴을 확인할 수 없었다.

This study aims to investigate the /ㄹ(l/□)/ variations according to task types and learners` proficiency in Korean. Depending on the phonological environment, Korean liquids /ㄹ/ have two allophones with lateral [l] and tap(flap) [□]. In this study, data were collected from Korean learners having different L1 backgrounds to examine two different /ㄹ/ variations through reading tasks (reading word lists and sentences) and free speech (self-introduction). The results showed that the accuracy of pronunciation depends on the task types and learners` fluency in Korean. The Korean learners displayed more accurate /ㄹ (l/□)/ pronunciation for reading tasks, which focus more on forms. In addition, Beginners and Advanced Korean learners displayed more accurate /ㄹ(l/□)/ pronunciation compared to Intermediate Korean learners. The results from Intermediate Korean learners demonstrate that systematic errors are present in the process of language acquisition. However, the results from informal tasks showed unsystematic errors, which could not be interpreted as being part of the second language acquisition process.
