대하소설은 우리 소설사에서 여성에 의해 주도된 최초의 대중서사물이라는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 이에 멜로드라마의 관점에서 그 특성과 위상을 살핌으로써 대하소설의 문학사적 의미를 보다 적극적으로 파악하고자 하였다. 대하소설은 다음과 같은 멜로드라마적 특성을 보인다. 첫째 혼인을 둘러싼 남녀관계와 여성수난담을 통한 선악구도 등을 대중적 견인 장치로 활용하여 여성적 관심사를 통속적으로 구조화하고 있다. 둘째 여성의 비극적 상황과 그에 대한 반응을 과장되게 그리거나 남성의 애정을 적극적으로 형상화함으로써 멜로드라마의 특징 중 하나인 감정의 과장과 과잉을 보여주면서 여성적 감수성을 자극한다. 셋째 대중적 소망에 부합하고자 하는 멜로드라마의 지향성에 따라 보편적 도덕률에 입각하여 행복한 결말을 그리지만 문제의 핵심인 가부장제의 모순은 해결되지 않은 채 지속된다는 딜레마를 안고 있다. 서구의 멜로드라마가 근대 대중서사장르로서 시대성을 반영하면서 대중적 양식을 구축해나간 것처럼 우리의 소설사에서 18세기의 특수성을 바탕으로 여성 중심의 한국적 멜로드라마가 형성되는 과정은 우리 문학사에 `여성`과 `대중성`이 중요화두로 등장하였을 뿐 아니라 이들이 문화의 소비 대상을 넘어서 주체적 생산자로서 성장하는 모습을 보여준다는 점에서 중요하다. 또한 대하소설에서 발견되는 멜로드라마적 요소들은 상층 여성들에 의해 주도된 한국적 대중서사물의 특징들을 담아낸다는 점에서 이후 성별과 계층의 경계를 넘어 확산되는 대중서사물의 전범이자 비교거리가 된다고 하겠다.
Korean classical long novel has significant meaning in the point of first popular narrative work led by woman in Korean novel history. Therefore, studying the characteristic and phase from the melodramatic point of view I positively intended to grasp the meaning in Korean novel history. Korean classical long novel has the following melodramatic characteristic. Firstly it popularly structuralizes the matter of woman interest applying confrontation between good and evil through the woman suffering story and the marriage-related relationships between male and female. Secondly it stimulates women`s sensitivity by exaggeratedly describing woman tragic situation and it`s response and by positively embodying male`s affection. Thirdly although it describes a happy ending on the basis of the universal ethical code, it holds the dilemma which continues without solution of the patriarchal contradiction as the heart of a problem. As the western melodrama, modern narrative genre, reflected the contemporaneity and builded popular style at the same time, in the process of Korean style melodrama formation centering round woman based on the characteristics of in 18th century in Korean novel history, it is important that `woman` and `popularity` appeared on the important topic, and besides, they showed the figure growing as the subjective producer beyond the object of cultural consumption. Also, in the point that the melodramatic elements found from Korean classical long novel represented the characteristics of the popular narrative work led by upper class women, it would be the model and the source of comparison of popular narrative works spreading beyond the border of the sex distinction and different class.
