국어국문학 연구에서 불교문학을 주제로 한 논의는 1920년대부터 현재까지 한세기에 가까운 전통을 지니고 있다. 그러나 개별 작품이나 작가를 연구하는 것과 별도로 최근 10년 이상 불교문학 전체를 조망하는 시도가 이루어지지 않은 실정이다. 최근 한국 불교학계에서는 지난 40년간의 불교문학연구에 대해 연구사 검토를 진행하고 앞으로의 연구 방향을 거론한 바 있다(2013.12). 그러나 해당 연구사논문은 불교학계에서 보는 불교문학의 개념과 업적에 대한 평가가 국어국문학계에서 보는 관점과 거리가 있다는 점을 여실히 보여주고 있다. 특히 개별 장르에 따른 연구사 검토와 연구방향을 제시하는 대목에서 국문학계에서 중요하게 다루어져 왔던 내용이 다루어지지 않아 아쉬움이 남는다. 이에 따라 본고는 지난 10년간(2005~2004) 진행된 불교문학 관련 개별 연구 가운데 주목할 만한 견해나 쟁점을 위주로 정리하고 그 의의를 드러내고자 하였다. 연구 대상으로는 조선후기 문학에 한정하였는데, 이 시기는 선학들의 불교문학 연구에서는 상대적으로 주목받지 못한 시기로, 새로운 자료와 연구 주제의 다양한 확장이 가능한 시기이기 때문이다. 본고는 부분적으로 학술논문 검색사이트의 도움을 받아 불교문학 관련 연구업적을 조사하였으나, 이 시기에 나온 학위논문, 일반논문, 저서 중에 중요한 업적이 누락되었을 가능성이 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 `객관적` 연구사가 가지는 범범한 논의보다는 논자의 입장에서 주목할 만한 견해나 쟁점을 위주로 서술하고 과제를 제시하는 방식을 취하기로 한다. 이런 방식이 오히려 이 방면 연구에 실제적인 도움을 줄 것으로 생각하기 때문이다.

In the research of Korean Language and Literature, discussions on the Buddhist literature have a history of about a century from the 1920s to the present. Apart from research on individual works or writers, however, for the last over 10 years, there has not been any attempt to review the whole picture of Buddhist literature. Recently (December 2013), the Korean Buddhist academic circle reviewed the history of research on Buddhist literature for the last 40 years and discussed future directions of research. However, the dissertation on research history showed clearly that the concept and achievements of Buddhist literature viewed from the Buddhist academic circle is distant from the viewpoint of the circle of Korean Language and Literature. It is particularly regretful that contents treated seriously in the circle of Korean literature were not covered in the review of research history and the suggestion of research directions for individual genres. Thus, this study purposed to present remarkable opinions or issues in individual studies on Buddhist literature carried out for the last 10 years (2005~2014) and to explore their meanings. The scope of research was limited to literature of the late Joseon Dynasty. This period has been relatively neglected in the scholars` research of Buddhist literature, and therefore it has potential for new materials and various ways of expansion of research themes. This study investigated achievements of research related to Buddhist literature partially with the help of academic search engines, but important ones among dissertations, theses, and books published during this period might be omitted. Nevertheless, instead of listing discussions in `objective` research history, this study described opinions or issues noteworthy from the debaters` position and presented tasks for future research. It was because this way was believed to give practical help to research in this area.
