이 연구는 작가 이병주의 미완성 최후작인 장편소설 『별이 차가운 밤이면』에 나타난 전쟁 체험과 내셔널리티에 대해 논의한다. 이병주는 학병세대의 체험을 기록하기 위해 소설을 썼으며, 이 소설에도 역시 그러한 작가의 의도가 나타난다. 다만, 『별이 차가운 밤이면』 이전의 이병주는 자신을 주인공으로 한 자전적인 서사를 통해 학병세대의 위신을 회복하고자 했으나, 이 소설에서 이병주는 허구적인 요소가 많은 서사를 통해 학병세대의 한계를 인식하는 모습을 표출한다. 내셔널리티의 문제가 바로 그것이다. 『별이 차가운 밤이면』은 근대의 기획인 내셔널리즘에 대해 문제를 제기하고 있으며 특히 학병세대가 가진 내셔널리티의 문제를 통해 이를 형상화해 내고 있다. 작가는 내셔널리티로 인해 발생한 학병세대의 내적 갈등은 전근대적인 제도인 신분제도의 한계에서 기인된 것이라고 파악한다. 학병세대가 형성될 수 있는 배경에 신분제도가 있었으며, 입신출세주의를 표방한 일본의 교육 제도를 받아들일 수 있었던 것도 신분제도의 영향 때문이다. 이 연구에서는 작가가 이 소설을 통해 내셔널리티를 극복할 수 있는 대안인 트랜스내셔널리티를 제시하고 있다고 분석한다. 그것은 세계 정세를 올바로 파악하고 다양한 지식을 습득하여 자기 찾기에 도달하는 것이다. 이것은 한국의 전근대 사회와 근대 사회를 체험했던 근대적 지식인이자 교양주의자인 작가만이 제시할 수 있는 대안이자 한계이다.
This study discusses the war experience and nationality in 『At Night with Cold Stars』, the incomplete novel which became the final piece of Byeong Ju Lee. Byeong Ju Lee wrote novels to record the experience of scholar soldiers enlisted during the Japanese Imperial Rule and his intention is also expressed in this novel. Lee mostly presented biographical epics with himself as the main character for the reputation of these scholar soldiers, but this novel particularly has many fictional elements and tends to admit the limitations of the scholar soldiers. This is expressed in the issue of nationality. 『At Night with Cold Stars』 suggested the modern issue of nationalism and uses it to address the nationality issue of the scholar soldiers. The author understands that the internal conflicts of the scholar soldiers engendered by nationality were born from the limitation of outdated status system. The status system underlied the formation of scholar soldiers and influenced the acceptance of Japan`s educational system that focuses on careerism. This study analyzes that the author suggests in this novel trans-nationality, which is the alternative to overcome nationality. It is understanding the world`s political situations and acquiring various types of knowledge in search of oneself. This is the alternative and limitation that can only be suggested by the author, a modern scholar and culturist who experienced both the pre-modern and the modern societies of Korea.
