이제현의 『역옹패설』은 『파한집』· 『보한집』과 함께 고려시대 시화·비평집으로 연구되어 왔지만, 인물기술의 측면에 있어서는 아직까지 그리 큰 주목을 받지 못했다. 때문에 『삼국사기·열전』, 승전, 『삼국유사』 등이 줄곧 고려시대 인물기술을 담당해온 것처럼 인식되었던 것도 사실이다. 하지만 실제 그러했는가에 대한 근원적인 물음이 필요했다. 이에 따라 『역옹패설·전집』에 수록된 인물기술과 그 일화적 특성을 살펴보고, 동시기 다른 작품 내지 글쓰기와 비교하여 서사적 의의까지 개진해 본 것이다. 그 결과 『역옹패설』은 기존의 `전(傳)`양식은 아니면서 `일화(逸話)`라는 새로운 형식의 글쓰기를 통해 역사적으로 실재하였던 다양한 인간상을 포착하고, 이를 문학적으로 형상화하였다는 점에서 비슷한 시기의 열전이나 승전과는 또 다른 층위의 성격임을 확인하게 되었다. 또한 『역옹패설』의 다양한 일화가 『고려사·열전』으로 수용되었다는 점에서 『역옹패설』은 고려시대 다양한 기록물 가운데 사료적 성격의 글쓰기이면서 서사의 형태를 갖춘, 하나의 새로운 `단편양식`이었음을 유추할 수 있었다. 『역옹패설』은 고려시대에 산포되어 나타난 서사의 한 부분을 차지했던 것이다. 지금까지 『역옹패설』에 대한 연구가 문학사적 맥락과 구체적인 작품 분석을 통한 총체적 접근이 거의 이루어지지 않았음을 감안할 때, 이 같은 새로운 시각의 연구는 고려시대서사의 결핍된 부분을 보충할 수 있는 중요한 결과를 얻어낸 것으로 판단된다.

“Yeok Ong Pae Seol” by LEE, Jae Hyeon has been studied with “Pa Han Jib”(『破閑集』) and “Bo Han Jib”(『補閑集』) as the one of the poem and story books and criticism books of Coryo dynasty. However, it couldn`t make a huge attention in the aspect of character description. For that reason, books such as “Sam Guk Sa Gi(『三國史記』). Yeol Jeon(biography, 列傳)”, “Seung Jeon(biography of Eminent Monk, 僧傳)”, “Sam Guk Yu Sa”(『三國遺事』) were considered as the main Character-Event- Description for Coryeo dynasty. At this point, it is necessary to see the other aspect whether it is true or not. Through the research, it was found “Yeok Ong Pae Seol” was different unlike “Yeol Jeon” and “Seung Jeon” in the similar period. “Yeok Ong Pae Seol” described human in a various way and developed it as a literary form using new writing style called “Il Hwa”, not writing style called “Jeon”(life story, 傳) established already. Under the possibility analysis of acceptance to “Coryeosa”(『高麗史』) and logic of classification, it is inferred that “Yeok Ong Pae Seol” was a new kind of “short story” that has a characteristic as historical material and a narrative form. This aspect occurred by literary flows and formation process for “Pilgi” in Coryeo dynasty as well as effect of China. As a result, “Yeok Ong Pae Seol” was not a separate style created all at once. It is the part of narrative story spread in Coryeo dynasty. This aspect of study is considered that can get a very important result to support missing part of narrative story in Coryeo dynasty, although it didn`t approach overall aspects through the context of literary history and detailed analysis.
