본 연구는 재난위기 상황에 투입되어 상담을 진행한 상담자들이 경험한 대리외상의 구조와 본질을 이해하고자 세월호 사고 위기상황에 투입되었던 9명의 상담자를 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하여 수집된 자료를 Giorgi의 기술적 현상학(descriptive phenomenology)으로 질적 분석하였다. 원 자료에서 208개의 의미단위를 도출하고 이중 중복되거나 구조 밖의 것들을 추려내고 93개의 중심의미를 구성한 한 후 다시 26개의 드러난 주제로 축약하였고 이를 지속적인 비교와 현상학적인 아이디어로 7개의 본질적 주제를 구성하였다. 분석 결과 드러난 본질적 주제로는 `세상과의 전투`, `미로에서 헤매기`, `타자의 삶 살기`, `고장 난 감정의 브레이크`, `희망의 불 지피기`, `고통과 교환된 선물`, `자기를 초월하여 다시 자기로`이다. 결과에 대해 논의하고 마지막으로 연구의 제한점을 제시하였다.

This study aims to understand the essential and structural elements of vicarious trauma experienced by the counselors who worked in disaster-caused crisis. It was conducted based on Giorgi`s descriptive phenomenology by qualitatively analyzing the data which were acquired from a series of in-depth interviews with 9 counselors who were called to counsel Sewol-ho crisis survivors. 208 meaning units were drawn from the original data, 93 significant meanings next composed by singling out overlapping or irrelevant units. Later, those were further abbreviated into 26 themes, and then, after a continuous comparison of the themes, finally 7 essential themes were abstracted as phenomenological ideas: that is, “battling with the world”, “wandering in a maze”, “living other`s life”, “broken brake of emotion”, “find a sense of hope”, “gift exchanged with pain” and “beyond oneself to be a self again”. Each theme is discussed in detail, and a limitation of the study is also mentioned.
