이 연구는 `-오-`의 소멸과 명사구 내포문 구성 변천의 상관성을 확인하고, 어떻게 변천하였는지 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 먼저, `-오-`의 기능과 동명사형 어미의 상관관계를 확인하였는데, 명사화 구성보다는 관형화 구성에서 `-오-`의 소멸이 빨리 진행되고, 관형화 구성에서도 피수식어가 일반명사일 때보다 의존명사 일 때 `-오-`의 소멸이 더 빠르게 진행되고 있음을 확인하였다. 다음으로, `-오-`의 소멸에 따른 명사화 구성의 변천 과정을 확인하였는데, `-기`명사화 구성의 활발한 사용이 `-ㅁ`명사화 구성을 위축시켜 `-오-`의 소멸을 가져왔다고 설명하였다. 마지막으로, `-오-`의 소멸에 따른 관형화 구성의 변천 과정을 확인하였는데, 관형화 구성의 변천은 `-ㄴ, -ㄹ`의 명사적 특성 약화와 의존명사 구문의 명사적 특성 약화가 명사적 성질을 가진 `-오-`를 실현시킬 이유가 없어지면서, 관형화 구성에서 나타나지 않게 되면서 변천의 과정을 거쳤다고 볼 수 있다.
