<문무대왕전>은 장도빈에 의해 1928년에 창작된 활자본 역사전기류 작품이다. 작품에서는 신라의 삼국통일 과정과 이어서 전개된 나당전쟁을 문무왕의 일대기에 맞추어 서술하고 있다. 특히 고구려, 백제, 신라 사이의 대립과 갈등보다는 신라를 중심으로 당나라와 대적하는 모습이 집중적으로 드러난다. 이는 당시의 민족 구성원들이 나라는 달랐어도 연합하여 당나라와 같은 외적을 우리의 영토에서 몰아내었다는 의미를 부각시키기 위한 것이다. 이러한 의미를 보다 분명히 드러내기 위해, 작자는 다음과 같은 특징적인 서술 방식을 활용하고 있다. 우선 문무왕의 일대기를 나열하듯이 서술하기 보다는 나당 전쟁의 과정을 중심으로 재편하고 있다. 다음으로는 고구려와 백제의 유민들이 신라와 연대하여 당나라에 저항하는 모습을 강조하고 있다. 마지막으로 조국을 배반하거나 내분을 일으키는 인물들과 조국에 충성하는 인물들을 하나하나 대비하여 서술하고 있다. 따라서 <문무대왕전>은 문무왕의 일대기에 대한 역사전기류 작품이지만, 이 작품이 일제강점기에 창작되었다는 점에서 시대적 의미는 컸다고 평가할 수 있다.

< Munmu-Daewang-Jeon(문무대왕전) > is a work in the print-edited historical biography of having been created in 1928 by Jang Do-bin(장도빈). The work is being described the process on Silla`s unification of three nations and Na-Tang War(나당전쟁), which was developed sequentially, in line with king Munmu`s life story. Especially, rather than the confrontation and the conflict among Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla, the image of facing against Tang Dynasty is intensively revealed centering on Silla. This is to highlight a meaning dubbed what ousted foreign enemy like Tang Dynasty from our territory by being united even if the racial members in those days were different in a nation. To reveal this meaning more clearly, the writer is utilizing 3 kinds of characteristic descriptive methods. First of all, it is reorganizing focusing on the process of Na-Tang War(나당전쟁) rather than describing as if enumerating king Munmu`s life story. Next, the image is being emphasized that the drifting people in Goguryeo and Baekje resist Tang Dynasty in solidarity with Silla. Finally, it is describing by comparing, respectively, between the figures of betraying homeland or giving rise to an internal conflict and the figures of being loyal to homeland. Accordingly, < Munmu-Daewang-Jeon > is a work in the print-edited historical biography on king Munmu`s life story, but can be said to have great suggestion in that this work was created in the period of Japanese occupation.
