본고는 향가의 소통 및 전승과 관련된 사서의 평어와 전승담의 내용을 통해 당대의 향가 인식과 그 전개 양상을 해명하고자 한다. 유리왕대 「도솔가」 관련 기록의 `민속환강(民俗歡康)`에서 보이듯, 향가를 비롯한 신라 시가는 그 형성기부터 서로 다른 존재들 사이의 소통을 통한 공감의 형성을 중시하였다. 이는 향가를 통한 공감의 형성과 그로 인한 온갖 현실적 효과의 파생을 중심으로 향가 전승담과 향가의 역사가 이루어지는 토대가 된다. 그러다가 8세기의 `감동천지귀신(感動天地鬼神)` 논의에 이르러 향가에 여러 세상을 `소통`시키고 초월적 존재를 현현(顯現)시키는 힘이 있다는 믿음으로 확장한다. 이 믿음은 신비성과 현실성을 함께 갖춘 주술의 범위를 넘어선, 주체 자신의 일상과 이를 벗어나 존재하는 신비로운 요소 사이의 조화와 어울림을 추구하는 것이었다. 다음 9 · 10세기에 드러난 조화론 지향은 현실 속의 적대적 관계를 해소하기 위한 `소통`을 매개로 서정주체의 고뇌를 제거하는 방법을 모색한 것이다. `골계(滑稽)`와 `세인희락지구(世人戱樂之具)`란 그 기능을 지칭한 표현이었다. 말하자면 신라 향가의 소통과 전승에는 특정한 수신자를 향한 소통과 공감을 중시하는 경향과 함께, 불특정 다수 또는 이계의 존재와의 상징적 교감을 추구하는 대칭적인 흐름이 있었다. 이들의 관계는 대칭적이기는 했지만 반드시 대립적인것은 아니었으며, 문면의 서정성과 문맥에서의 구체적 · 상징적 효용성을 겸비했던 향가의 시적 성취는 여기서 유래했다.

Third, pursuit of harmony theory of the 9th century is to explore how to remove the cause and anguish of the main agent through “communication” to solve hostile relationship in the reality. Records on communication records of Silla Hyangga emphasized concrete communication between existences with difference positions or had symmetric tendency of pursuing symbolic sympathetic feeling with the existence of other world.
