『어스시의 마법사』는 영미권을 대표하는 글로벌 판타지 문학임에도 불구하고, 국내에서 연구된 사례가 많지 않다. 본고는 르 귄 소설의 개성을 변별하는 데 중요한 소재가 된다고 판단되는 `마법`의 의미를 다양한 관점에서 고찰해보고자 한다. 사실상 마법은 이질적인 여러 판타지 소설들을 관통하는 공통적인 아이템으로, 초자 연적인 긴장을 자아내는 소재가 되어 왔다. 그와 대조적인 입장에서 보면, 마법이라는 비사실적인 힘의 개입은 서사적 개연성을 떨어뜨리는 기능을 수행하는 경우가 많았던 것도 사실이다. 이러한 마법의 소재적 특징을 참고하여 주목하면, 르 귄의 마법은 매우 유다른 특징을 가진다고 할 수 있다. 마법이 철학적 함의를 표지하는 서사의 주요 변곡점이 되는것은 물론, 독자와의 스토리텔링 과정에서 매우 중요한 기능을 담당하기 때문이다. 구체적인 분석 결과, 『어스시의 마법사』의 마법은 큰 틀에서 세 가지 특징을 보여주었다. 먼저 주인공 게드는 마법을 통해 `자아 찾기`를 위한 존재론적 성찰의 여정에 참여한다. 장르적 관점에서 다소 무겁고 진지한 설정이라고 할 수도 있지만, 그로부터 구축되는 『어스시의 마법사』의 환상은 대중적 감응력을 내재한다. 두 번째로, 『어스시의 마법사』의 마법은 신화적 상상력을 불러오는 시적 심미성을 보여준다. 단순화의 위험을 무릅쓰고 인유(引喩)적으로 말하면, `마법사/시인`, `마법 배우기/시작(詩作) 훈련`은 긴밀하게 중첩된다. 진정한 마법사가 되기 위한 가장 중요한 조건이 사물의 본질을 꿰뚫는 직관력과 통찰력을 갖추는 것, 대상의 진정한 이름을 언명하는 것이라는 점에서 그러한 비교는 설득력을 갖는다. 세 번째로, 게드가 마법을 통해 깨달은 삶의 진실은, 장자의 사상적 중핵에 해당하는 `이도관지(以道觀之)`의 경지와 상통한다. 또한 게드가 마법사로서 성장하는 과정은, `자타`의 구분을 극복하고 인간과 인간, 인간과 세계 사이의 균형과 평형을 도모하는 생태주의적 삶을 깨달아가는 여정을 보여준다. 향후 르 귄 문학에 대한 통시적 연구와 스토리텔링 면에서의 특장점에 대한 분석이 점진적으로 진행되어야 할 것으로 보인다. 그러한 작업이 이야기 산업 내에서 거점 콘텐츠로 자리매김되고 있는 판타지 콘텐츠를 더 효율적으로 기획하는 데 도움을 줄 것이라 확신한다.
Despite its place as global fantasy novel representing Anglophone countries, A Wizard of Earthsea has few research cases internally. This study tries to variously consider the meaning of `magic` judged as important material to tell the individuality of Le Guin`s novels. Practically magic is a common item penetrating many different fantasy novels, and has been the material evoking supernatural tension. In other ways, there were also many cases that the invention of unrealistic power called magic downgrades narrative tension. Compared to those cases, Le Guin`s magic has unusual features. Because not only magic becomes the main inflection point labeling philosophical implication, but also takes charge of important function in storytelling process between readers. Through concrete analysis, in A Wizard of Earthsea magic shows three features in big frame. First, protagonist Ged takes part through magic in the journey of ontological introspection for `self-exploration.` It can be a little heavy and serious setting in genre viewpoints, but the fantasy of A Wizard of Earthsea built from it indwell popular sentience. Second, A Wizard of Earthsea`s magic shows poetic aesthetics causing mythic imagination. Speaking allusionally by risking simplification, `wizard/poet`, `studying magic/poem writing training` closely overlaps. Those comparison becomes persuasive because possessing intuition and insight penetrating essence of things, and declaring the object`s true name are most important condition to be the real wizard. Third, the truth of life that Ged realized through magic, participates with stage of `yidogwanji`, which is Chuang Tzu`s ideological core. And the process of Ged growing up as a wizard, shows the journey overcoming the division between `oneself and others`, and realizing ecological life promoting equilibrium and balance between human and human, human and world. Diachronic research and analysis about features in storytelling of Le Guin`s novels should be gradually go along hereafter. Those works can give help to more efficiently plan fantasy contents, which emerging as the positioned contents in story industry.
