이 글에서는 『삼국유사』 소재 설화인 「조신」이 현대소설과 영화에 어떻게 변모, 수용되었는가 하는 점을 밝혔다. 조신설화는 꿈꾸기 전 · 꿈속 · 꿈에서 깬 후 등으로 크게 나눌 수 있는데, 여러 매체로 수용되면서 꿈속 부분만 다양하게 변주되었다. 현대소설과 영화에서 차용하고 있는 환몽(還夢)구조는 일회적인 인생을 두 번 살아보게 하는 효과가 있어 인생의 시행착오를 줄일 수 있게 한다. 승려인 조신이 사랑하는 여자와 살게 되었을 때 겪게 될 일들을 꿈속에서 미리 살아봄으로써, 현실에서는 사랑하는 마음을 버리고 구도의 길을 걸을 수 있게 한다. 조신이 꿈을 꿈으로써 사랑을 버린다는 이야기는 인간의 자아는 고정된 것이 아니라 늘 변화하는 것이라는 불교의 무아론(無我論)을 환기시킨다. 그러나 이 설화는 조신이 몇 시간의 꿈을 꾸고 난 아침에 머리가 하얗게 세고 삶의 의욕을 잃었다고 함으로써 사랑하는 마음을 버리는 것이 너무나 어렵다는 사실 또한 보여 준다. 이러한 두 개의 시선은 조신 설화가 단순한 불교 설화가 아니라 매우 인간적이고 문학적이라는 것을 알게 한다. 그러나 이광수의 소설, 신상옥과 배창호의 영화들에서는 이 두 개의 시선을 보여 주는데 아쉬운 점이 있다. 사랑에 충실한 꿈속 이야기에서 다양하게 변주되어 각자의 개성을 보여주지만, 조신이 꿈을 꾸고 나서는 사랑하는 마음을 버리고 불도를 열심히 닦게 되었다고 끝냄으로써 종교적 색채만 강조된다. 앞으로 다른 매체에서 조신설화를 수용하여 창작한다면 꿈속 이야기의 창조와 함께 사랑을 버리는 것이 너무나 어려운 일이라는 것을 표현하는 기법이 강구되어야 할 것이다. 또한 조신설화의 특이점인 환몽구조는 살리면서 조신을 신라의 승려로 한정하지 않는다면 훨씬 더 자유롭게 창작할 수 있고, 불교적 색채를 벗어나 우리가 사는 당대적 삶을 이야기할 수 있어 더 다채로운 창작이 가능할 것이다.

In this article I have studied how the folktale 「Josin」, which is based on 『The Heritage of the Three States』, in infiltrated into the contemporary novels and movies. Folktale Josin is composed of three parts; before the dream, in the dream, and after the dream. The story have been infiltrated into various media, but only the contents in the dream have been modulated. Since the structure of the empty dream embedded into novels and movies has the effect of dual life instead of single one, it reduces the trial and error in course of life. In the dream a monk Josin had experienced the virtual course of life with the woman he has loved in advance. So he could give up the love and pursuit the truth in reality. The story that Joshin fall out of love through dream aroused annihilation of self that human self is not only fixed thing but also changing thing. However, the folktale Josin takes ironical technique reminding us of the agony that giving up the love in mind by describing Josin`s hair turned into white and lost the zest in life in the morning after few hours of dream. The irony illustrates us that the folktale Josin is not only a simple Buddhism folktale but also a humane and literary story. But it is a regret that the novel written by Yi Gwangsu and movies directed by Sin Sangok and Bae Changho failed to reveal the irony hidden in folktale. The novelist and directors expressed their own characteristics in a variety of the modulated story of dream, but they emphasized only the aspect of Buddhism by concluding that Josin gave up the love and underwent religious training after he woke up from his dream. I hope that the future media should consider how to devise the method of containing the irony as well as the creative story of dream in the folktale Josin. To retain the feature of empty dream of the folktale Josin and expand the creative field in terms of the folktale Josin, the scope of the story should abandon the confinement of the character Josin as a monk in the Silla Dynasty, break the boundary of Buddhism and expand into a variety of life for encouraging the literary creativity.
