본고는 공동체 개념을 1920년대 문학을 바라보는 새로운 틀로 제기하고자 한다. 즉, 공동체와 사회라는 종래 서구 사회학의 개념적 틀에서 벗어날 필요를 제기하고 새롭게 근대 사회의 영역들을 구축해나가기 시작한 20년대 초반 조선에서 공동체의 가능성과 한계를 염상섭 소설에 대한 분석을 통해 규명하고자 한 것이다. 이로써 3.1운동 전후 총독부의 사회 담론에 대응해 새롭게 형성되어가던 사회를 염상섭이 어떻게 인식하고 형상화하였는지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 위해 지금까지 하나의 세대로 묶여 논의되었던 3.1운동 이후의 청년 세력이 자체 내에 여러 지류를 담고 있었으며, 그 각각의 지류가 개조의 흐름과 맞물려 새로운 사회 구성에 대한 기획을 보여주었음에 주목하였다. 이 과정에서 염상섭 초기 소설에 등장하는 두 가지 여성의 이미지, 즉 목 조르는 여자와 자살하는 여자를 토대로 1920년대 사회에서 여성의 자유연애가 지니는 의미를 고찰하였다. 또한, 본고는 자유연애가 가족 구성의 새로운 방법으로 모색되었다가, 사회에 대한 여러 세력 간의 헤게모니 투쟁 안에서 그 의미가 변질되었다는 점을 강조하고자 하였다. 헤게모니 투쟁 과정에서 자유가 성별정치와 연계되면서 여성은 사회에서 수동적 위치에 머무르게 된다. 이 점에서 본고는 20년대 `자유`의 속성에 대해 물을 수 없게 된 이유가 부자유한 식민지 상황에서 비롯되었다기보다 헤게모니 투쟁 과정에서 사회의 진정한 의미에 대한 질문이 부재한 데에서 비롯되었음을 「미해결」의 여성 이미지 분석을 통해 밝히고자 하였다.

This article aimed at investigating the meaning of young people generation`s differentiation in early 1920s`, on the base of two kinds of woman image, the strangling woman and the suiciding woman in Yeom Sang Seop`s early novels. And, in this process, we tried to reveal the way how Yeom recognized and embodied the meanings of societies newly-developed against the society discourse by the Japanese Government-General of Korea around the 1919[Samil] Independence Movement. Especially, it was taken notice that free-love was sought as the new way for the family formation, then was disparaged through the hegemony struggle by diverse groups which tried to make the community into the socialized notion. It means that the ground why properties of `free` in free-love was not investigated is not the colonial situation, but the absence of inquiries about the true community in that struggle. This article emphasized the necessity the argument about the community get out the concept frame by the western sociology, and tried to identify the potential of the community in 1920s` Chosun where the modern social spheres was just formed, through the novels.
