이 연구는 포석(抱石) 조명희의 소설 「낙동강」에 나타난 낭만성의 특징과 그 기원을 살피는 것이다. 「낙동강」은 같은 시대의 카프(KAPF) 소설과는 다른 독특한 낭만적 특징을 가지고 있다. 낙동강-자연의 신성화와 그 생명력에 대한 찬미나 새로운 사회 건설에 대한 낙관주의적 전망 등이 그것이다. 이것은 그의 유학시절 경험했던 아나키즘과 그와 깊은 연관이 있는 다이쇼(大正) 생명주의 사상에 그 기원을 두고 있으며, 또한 한 때 심취했던 타고르류(類)의 신낭만주의와 더불어, 러시아 혁명과 2차 세계대전으로 인해 일본과 식민지 조선에서 유행했던 `개조론`의 영향으로 부상하기 시작한 신이상주의에 크게 영향을 받고 있다. 이렇듯 「낙동강」에 나타난 낭만성은 데카당과 상징주의를 기반으로 하고 있던 박영희적 경향의 낭만성과는 그 계보를 달리한다. 따라서 신경향파를 박영희적 경향과 최서해적 경향으로 나누고, 이들이 각각 전(前)시기의 낭만주의와 자연주의의 유산을 계승하면서도 지양 발전시킨 것으로 파악하는 종래의 관점에도 얼마간 시사를 줄 수 있을 것이다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics and origin of Romantic in 「Nakdong River」, a novel by Jo-Muong Hee (pen name: Poseok). 「Nakdong River」 has unique romantic characteristics different from those of KAPF novels from the same period. Nakdong River shows the sacred view of nature, the admiration of its vitality, and the optimistic view of new society. These characteristics are based on anarchism Jo experienced while studying abroad and the deeply related Daiso, and strongly influenced by Tagore-like Neo-Romanticism and Neo-Idealism from the `Theory of Reformation` that was popular in Japan and Joseon under the Japanese Imperial Rule because of the Russian Revolution and WWII. The Romantic view in 「Nakdong River」 is different from that of Young Hee Park based on decadence and symbolism. Therefore, the existing theory can be corrected that divides the New Tendencies into the tendency of Young Hee Park and the tendency of Seo Hae Choi, each of which is perceived to succeed and develop the heritages of Romanticity and Naturalism from the previous period.
