김영석은 해방 이후부터 본격적인 문학 활동을 한 작가이다. 1946년에는 조선문학가동맹 산하 문학대중화운동위원회 위원장으로 평론과 문단활동을 하였고, 소설들은 주로 노동자의 현실을 담아낸 작품들을 발표하였다. 월북 이후에도 김영석은 작품 활동을 전개해 나간다. 특히 6·25 전쟁 때 종군활동을 했던 경험을 바탕으로 한 종군소설들을 주로 발표하였다. 하지만 지금까지 김영석에 대한 논의는 해방기 작품들을 중심으로 이루어졌다. 월북 이후 김영석은 비록 작품 수는 많지 않지만, 꾸준한 작품활동을 해왔다. 그러므로 북한에서 발표된 소설들을 살펴보는 작업은 김영석 소설세계의 전반을 이해할 수 있는 기틀을 마련하는 작업이라는 데 그 중요성이 있다. 따라서 김영석의 북한소설들, 특히 그동안 논의되지 않았던 단편소설과 발굴소설 「보배손」이 갖는 의미를 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 김영석의 작품 전반을 살펴볼 수 있는 실증적 연구인 동시에, 북한문학사에서 김영석이 갖는 의미를 재조명하는 기회가 될 것이다.

Kim Young-seok was active in literary activities in full scale after the independence. In 1946, he served as chairman of Literature Popularization Campaign Committee under Chosun Literary Workers` Association, and was very active not only in creative works but also in critics and other literary circle activities. At the time, Kim Young-seok published works containing the reality of laborers. Kim Young-seok continued the work of creative writing even after going to North. He created many works based on his services in Korean War. Despite his many works in North Korea, discourses on Kim Young-seok focused on his works produced around the time of Independence. Although he did not write many after going to North, it is important to review his works produced in North Korea since it will give the foundation to understand his viewpoint of novels. Therefore, this article tried to review his novels produced while he was in North Korea. In particular, this article focused on short stories to identify the trend of his works and tried to illuminate the meaning of `Bobaeson`, a novel of repatriate.
