This study discusses how travel essays of the 1920s and 1930s represented Manchu and related to Japanese colonialism, and how prevalent perceptions about Joseon people living in Manchu differed before and after foundation of Manchu State. Travel essays of the 1920s depicted Manchu as a symbol of violent state that is remembered as inspection and interrogation done by the police and the military because Japan strongly opposed China`s occupation of Manchu and had on-going military conflicts in this area. In the essays, Manchu was also emphasized for the purpose of recovering national origins of Joseon as it was historically and geographically tied to the Kingdom. This can be interpreted as a description of an alternative future of the nation on the premise of geographic imagination. After foundation of Manchu State in the 1930s, Jiandao, which emerged in the course of establishing the Jiandao administration, was closely related to Joseon people`s efforts to recover their identity. This served as an opportunity for the Joseon people in Manchu to renew their awareness about sovereignty in relation with the nation`s right to life. From the mid-1930s, Manchu State became a symbol of the Japanese imperial power in the travel essays, and the narratives were described from Joseon people`s point of view that observed Japanese civilization in Manchu. In addition, Haerbin and Changchun were described as cold-blooded and unethical cosmopolitan areas and as exotic places to Joseon people. Still, such narratives are mimicked Japanese people`s perspectives. The essays appropriated Manchu by taking the stance of the Japanese.
