이 글은 20세기로 넘어가는 시기에 거세게 밀려든 서구의 근대성에 맞서, 우리가 어떻게 근대적 주체를 형성해 나갔는가를 고찰하였다. 여기서 주목한 텍스트는 갑오개혁 직후정부에서 간행한 교과서 『국민소학독본』(1895)이다. 이 책은 최초의 근대 국어과 교과서로 평가되는데, 책에는 당시 조선 정부가 추구했던 가치와 이념, 만들어내고자 했던 국민의 모습이 구체적으로 담겨 있다. 『국민소학독본』은 수신과 역사, 지리와 과학, 서사와 전기 등 여러 내용을 두루 수록한 통합 교과서로, 오늘날의 `국어` 교과서처럼 학생들에게 근대 지식을 제공하고 동시에 근대적 주체를 양서하려는 내용으로 채워져 있다. 당시 정부는 일제의 압력과 서구의 출현 등 급변하는 정세 속에서 스스로를 개혁하지 않으면 살아남을 수 없다는 절박한 인식을 갖고 있었다. 그런 인식에서 당대 지배층은 우리의 현실을 직시하고 실사구시와 이용후생의 정신을 갖춘, 그러면서 우리도 서구와 같은 문명강국이 될 수 있다는 낙관적 신념으로 무장한 주체를 만들어내고자 하였다. 그런데, 당시 개화를 주도했던 세력은 대부분 과거 부르주아 계층 출신이라는 점에서, 서구적인 지향을 갖고 있음에도 불구하고 한편으로는 전통적 가치와 이념에 무의식적으로 긴박된 모습을 보여주었다. 실용적이고 현실적인 태도를 보여주지만 한편으로는 의식과 가치에서 전통지향적인 특징을 갖고 있었던 것이다. 『국민소학독본』은 또한 제국주의의 국가 철학의 기초가 되는 사회진화론에 바탕을 두었던 관계로 문명국에 대한 동경과 선망의 심리를 보여줄 뿐, 제국주의의 침략성을 경계하거나 부정하지 못하는 순진하고 안이한 모습을 보여주었다. 수록된 글들의 어디에도 영국과 미국의 제국주의적 성격에 대해서는 언급되지 않으며 대신 우리가 가까이 하고 본받아야 할 모델로만 서술된다. 그런 점에서 『국민소학독본』에서 목격되는 주체의 이중성은 개화파 지식인들의 멘탈리티를 그대로 반영한 것이자 동시에 당대의 사회적 가치와 이념을 단적으로 집약한 것이다. 그런데, 이 주체는 가부장적 위계질서를 내재한 것이라는 점에서, 한편으로는 일제가 이후 본격적으로 강요한 천황중심의 수직적 위계질서와 결합할 가능성을 이미 갖고 있었다.

This article stands on how we have established the modern identity against to the western modernization that flooded on the late 19 to early 20 century. The text that has been focused on was the 『Gukminsohakdokbon』 (1895) published by government immediately after the Gabo Reform of 1894. Not only this book was regarded to be the first modern Korean language arts textbook, this book but also specifically contains the ideology and value that were aimed by the government of Chosun and the figure of its people that the government wanted to mold. The 『Gukminsohakdokbon』 is a consolidated version of textbook that variably contains hisory, moral, geography, science, epic and biography that provides the modern knowledge to the students similar the Korean language arts textbook nowadays as well as providing important standard to be grown to the modern independent. The government at the time was desperately aware of the fact that unless people are self reforming, no one can survive within the rapidly changing era of pressure from Japan and emerging the western people. Within the awareness, the hierarchy of the era was squarely looking the given reality of our people and willing to create such independents who have positive belief of becoming cultural superpower country like western countries with the spirits of scientific based on evidence and ensuring the well-being through proper use of tools available. However, as the background of group that was leading the civilization was mainly from former bourgeois, in spite of the fact that they have a westernized aim, they were unconsciously strained to the traditional values and ideology. From the given perspective, the duplicity and hybridism that was observed from 『Gukminsohakdokbon』 can be said that the book reflects the mentality of civilization people as well as simply integrating the social value and ideology of the time.
