이 글은 1907년 학부가 발간한 『普通學校學徒用 國語讀本』(이하 『국어독본』)이 교과서로서 갖는 특징을 밝힐 것을 목적으로 한다. 『국어독본』은 『신정심상소학』(1896)의 뒤를 잇는 국정 국어교과서이자, 동시대 발간된 다양한 사찬(私撰) 국어교과서들과 경쟁적·대립적 성격을 갖는 교과서이다. 여기에서는 대상이 교과서로서 갖는 특징을 부각시키기 위해 교과서의 내적 체제와 본문을 분석하고, 분석의 결과 중 『국어독본』만의 특징이라 판단되는 내용을 모아 `교과서의 위상`에 따라 정리한 뒤, 이를 이전 시대의 국정 국어교과서 및 동시대의 사찬 국어 교과서와 비교해 보았다. 그 결과 『국어독본』은 수업 자료로서 한글 깨치기 학습이 강화된 교재라는 특징을 갖으며, 교육 공동체의 신념의 산물로서 교과서 구성이 체계화되고 다양한 서술 방식이 구현된 교재인 동시에, 당대 사회·정치·문화적 배경의 반영물로서 친일(親日) 세계관이 심화되고 견고화된 교재로 평가될 수 있다. 이는 곧 『국어독본』이 일제가 대한제국의 교육을 장악하기 위한 일환으로 편찬한 교과서로서의 특징을 가지고 있음을 보여주는 것으로, 일본식 계몽 혹은 근대화의 단면이라 할 수 있겠다.

This study focuses on the feature as the textbook of《Guk-uh-Dok-bon for elementary school students》(meant Korean Language Reader) that was published by Hak-bu(the Korean Empire Ministry of Education) in 1907.《Gukuh- Do-kbon》 is a government designated textbook, which was after《Sim- Sang-So-Hak》(meant basal reader), and has the competitive and oppositive position against the privately published textbooks by various publisher in the same period. In this article, to reveal the feature of《Guk-uh-Do-kbon》 as a textbook clearly, I analyzed a system and body of this textbook, then I organized the results following `the status of a textbook` and compared it with a textbooks that was published by government early and a textbook that was published by private in the same period. As a result,《Guk-uh-Do-kbon》 has a developed teaching material for learning to read relatively, has a sytematic system to organize the unit, and has the deepen and strong perspective of pro-japanese colonialism.
