본고에서는 `-다고`가 연결어미로 문 접속기능을 함에도 불구하고 한국어교육에서 문법항목으로 체계적이며 명시적으로 제시되지 못하여 왔다는 데에 문제를 제기하고 한국어교육 자료에 실린 `-다고`, `-다고 하-X`, `-다고 (해서)` 등 `-다고` 관련 문법항목의 의미 및 통사적 특징을 분석하여 교육 내용과 교육 순서를 정립하였다. `-다고`가 이를 대신할 수 있는 `-어서`, `-려고`, `-다는 말처럼` 등과 차별되는 의미는 [근거제시]이며, [이유]와 [목적], [대중적 믿음]이라는 세부 의미를 갖게 된다. 또한, `-다고`는 논리 관계 부정문 및 수사의문문에 쓰이면서 `-다고 해서`로 대체될 수 있으며 선행절은 후행절 사태에 대한 [근거부정]을 나타낸다. `-다고`의 통사적 제약은 여타 연결어미와는 달리 선행절 발화자 상정 여부, 선행절 발화 및 생각 주체와 후행절 사태의 주체와의 일치 여부 등에 의존된다. `-다고` 관련 문법항목은 선행 학습 항목과의 연계성, 기본 의미의 현저성, 의미 전개 양상, 담화 기능의 난이도, 통사적 제약에 따라 인용구문인 `-다고 하다`를 시작으로 하여 `-다고 하-X`, `-다고 하면서`와 `-다고 (하면서)`, [대중적 믿음]의 `-다고`, [이유] 및 [목적]의 `-다고`, [근거부정]의 `-다고 (해서)`의 순서로 제시될 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to suggest the educational information on the connective ending `-dago` by analyzing the meanings and syntactic characteristics of `-dago`, `-dago ha-X`, and `-dago (haeseo)` derived from the indirect quotative construction `-dago hada`. `-Dago ha-X` has the function of indirect quotation and the meaning of connective ending `X`. However, the antecedent clause of `-dago` gives the rationale behind the following clause. Furthermore, there are some syntactic constraints in `-dago`, unlike `-dago ha-X`. The basic meaning of `-dago`, [giving the rationale] is divided into three, [cause], [purpose] and [popular belief]. `-Dago` used in logically negative statements or rhetorical interrogatives shows that the antecedent clause becomes the [denial of rationale] of the following clause. And it could be replaced by `-dago haeseo`. An analysis of the semantic development aspects and the syntactic constraints of grammatical items including `-dago` shows that `-dago hada` should be arranged in the first place, then `-dago ha-X`, `-dago hamyeonseo` and `-dago (hamyeonseo)`, `-dago` meaning [popular belief], `-dago` meaning [cause] or [purpose], and lastly `-dago (haeseo)`.
