본고의 일차적 목적은 우리나라 최초의 번역시집 『懊惱의 舞蹈』에 수록된 번역시편들의 언어 표현상의 특징을 형식과 리듬으로 나누어 고찰하는 것이다. 이를 통해 근대 자유시형에 대한 김억의 인식의 전개 과정, 즉 초기 산문시형에서 자유시형으로 전이되는 과정을 해명할 수 있다. 이는 궁극적으로 『懊惱의 舞蹈』가 근대 자유시의 형성 과정에 끼친실제적 영향 관계를 규명하는 데 기초 자료를 제공할 것이다. 『懊惱의 舞蹈』의 형식적 양상은 연(stanza)과 시행(line)의 구조를 통해 확인할 수 있는데, 연구 결과 김억이 특정 형태의 시 형식을 선호하고 있음을 확인할 수 있다. 연의 경우 서양의 소네트에서 차용한 3행연과 4행연이, 시행의 경우 서술어와 부사어 위주로 된 14±4음절의 길이의 시행이 주를 이루고 있다. 이는 김억이 원시의 리듬감을 살리기 위해 음절수의 제한과 같은 방법을 사용하고 있음을 암시한다. 『懊惱의 舞蹈』에서 시의 형식적 특성은 리듬적 특성과 긴밀히 호응한다. 김억은 자유시 리듬의 요체를 시인의 호흡에서 찾고 있는데, 시의 내용과 정조에 따라 호흡의 마디를 다르게 배열하고 있다. 이는 안서가 호흡 마디의 크기와 수에 따라 시적 정조와 분위기가 달라진다는 것을 분명하게 인식하고 있음을 보여준다. 여기서 호흡발산력의 차이와 율독의 항상성을 유지하려는 노력은 호흡 마디의 분할을 야기하는 주요원인이 된다. 템포의 차이도 여기에서 비롯한다.

The primary purpose of this article deals with the aspects of form and rhythm in Kim Uk`s Dance of Agony, the first modern translation-poems in Korea. From this study, we know Kim Uk`s concepts of free verse and the process of change from prose-verse to free-verse. Firstly, the aspect of form in Dance of Agony. Kim Uk prefers a stable and ordered form to a unstable and disordered form. Tercet and quatrain stemming from Sonnet are mainly stanza. And 14±4 syllables have the most syllable of all the lines. This means that the arrangement of syllables is the principle of versification of lines in Kim Uk`s poetry. Secondly, the aspect of rhythm in Dance of Agony. The pattern of breath in Dance of Agony is the key point of the whole structure of Kim Uk`s poetry. In other words, the dimension and volume of breath-unit is the primary point to connect poem`s emotion(mood) and rhythm. From this discussion, we know that his thinking about poetic rhythm have a profound effect on the formation of modern poetry in both contents and forms.
