조영출은 약 150여 편의 시와 600여 곡의 대중가요를 발표한 시인이자 작사가이며, 극작가 · 연출가이다. 조영출의 시세계는, 일찍이 김기림이 1930년대를 대표하는 `도회의 시인`으로 주목한 이후, `모더니즘-리얼리즘(또는 현실주의)`의 이분법적 구도 속에서 연구되어 왔다. 본고는 먼저, 조영출의 삶과 시에서 건봉사 소속의 학승이라는 신분이 미친 영향에 주목하였다. 그리고 해방 이전까지 조영출의 시를 대상으로, 시의 형식과 미의식, 시적 주체의 존재방식이 두 계열로 분화되는 양상을 살펴보았다. 그의 시세계는 산사의 삶에 근거하여 자연의 리듬과 시원의 심상을 외재적 형식과 관습적인 미의식으로 표현한 계열과, 근대 문명의 만화경을 텍스트로 재창조하여 그 어둠의 속성을 탐색한 계열로 나누어진다. 그리고 조율된 외적 리듬과 형식, 관습적인 언어와 미의식의 시 계열은 대중가요가사의 장르적 특징으로 연결되었다. 1930년대 조영출 시의 핵심은, 근대도시 경성을 통해 체험한 모더니티의 기호와 기제들을 시적 주체가 접속하는 방법, 그리고 그 기호들을 배열하는 시적 주체의 고유한 존재방식에 있었다. 시적 주체는 타자의 시선으로 부란(腐爛)하는 도시 문명의 기호와 표상들을 응시하고, 극적인 긴장감 속에서 근대 문명의 모순과 마성(魔性)을 들추어낸다. 김기림은 이러한 조영출 시의 새로운 방법을 `위트`로 설명하였다. 한편 도시 문명의 타자를 자임하는 시적 주체의 내면에는 자연과 신화적 시원의 시·공간이 존재한다. 두 세계의 긴장과 맞섬이 조영출 도시 시의 특징이다. 그런데 모더니티에 오염되지 않은 순결한 세계인 자연과 신화적 시원의 시 · 공간을 피안으로 구축할 때 `지금-여기`의 현실은 유보되거나 배제된다. 이렇게 두 개의 시 · 공간에서 위계화가 생성되면서, 초월과 절대, 순수의 시간이 시를 조율하게 되는 것이다.
Cho Young-Chul(or Cho Myung-Ahm, 1923~1993) published about 150 or more pieces of poems and wrote the words of about 600 popular songs. Cho was given various names such as poet, song writer, playwriter and producer. The study of Cho`s literature has been self-restrained for a long time because he went to North Korea. Cho`s poetic world has been examined in the dichotomic structure of modernism and realism since Kim Gi-Lim estimated him as a leading poet of urbanity in the 1930s. This paper, above all, paid attention to the influence of his position as a learned priest of Gun Bong Temple over his life and poems. Cho`s poetic works which were written before the Korean Liberation can be divided into two groups. One contains the poems which, based upon his life in mountain temples, represent the rhythms in nature and the mental images of the primitive age through external form and conventional consciousness of beauty. The other contains those which recreate into the poetic text the kaleidoscope of modern civilization and inquire into the properties of its darkness. Those poetic works showing modulated external rhythm and form, conventional language and beauty consciousness are closely related to the words of his popular songs in terms of the traits ofgenre. The main concern of Cho`s poems in the 1930s was to discover the contradiction and wickedness of modernity by staring at the signs and symbols of urban civilization in the view of an `other`. In the inner world of Cho`s poetic subject which regards himself as an other in urban civilization are located nature and mythic time and space of the primitive age. The special features of Cho`s poems are based on the tension and conflict of the two worlds. On the other hand,the realities of `now and here` are to be reserved or excluded in his poems as his utopian place is only confined to the pure world of nature or the mythic time and space of the primitive age. Thus, building a hierarchy between the two worlds, Cho`s poems come to be modulated by transcendence, absoluteness and pure values.
