본고의 목적은 장소로서 `구곡`이 지니는 다양한 의미를 작품을 통해 살펴보고는 데 있다. 조선 후기 문인 학자들에게 구곡은 은거지 차원을 넘어 집단의 이상이 집약된 상징적인 장소로 존재했다. 작품에 나타난 구곡의 다층적인 의미를 밝히기 위해 E. 렐프의 장소이론을 도입하였다. 2장에서는 공간의 여러 가지 성격을 제시하고, 공간 내 의미 중심인 `장소`의 본질을 설명함으로써 구곡이 `장소`로서 성립 가능함을 밝혔다. 송시열의 은거지였던 `화양동`이 제자들의 노력으로 `화양구곡`으로 재정립되는 과정을 보여줌으로써 구곡이 다층적인 의미를 지닌 공간으로 변화하는 과정을 살폈다. 옥계구곡에 대한 기문을 통해 구곡이 `장소`로서의 본질을 갖추고 있음을 설명했다. 그 다음으로는 개별 작품 분석을 통해 각각의 구곡이 지닌 정체성을 분석하고자 하였다. 우선 3장에서는 각 구곡의 물리적 환경, 그 속에 이루어진 행위(경험), 구곡을 통해 작자가 부여하고자 했던 의미를 밝힘으로써 작품에 형상화된 구곡의 정체성을 밝혔다. 4장에서는 구곡을 접하는 사람의 태도에 따라 구곡의 정체성이 달라질 수 있음을 밝혔다. 한번 형성된 구곡에 대한 정체성이 집단으로 확산·변화하는 과정을 밝혔다.

The purpose of this article is to identify a wide range of meanings of `Gugok` as a place. Gugok was a symbolic place integrating the ideals of the group beyond a safe-haven for literary scholars in the late Joseon Period. The place theory of Edward Relph is introduced to identify multi-layered meanings of Gugok appearing on literary works. In Chapter Two, the possibility of establishment for Gugok as a `place` are reviewed by suggesting various characteristics of place and expressing the essence of `location` with the meaning-oriented approach. Gugok`s changing process to a place with multi-layered meanings are is reviewed by showing the reestablishing process of `Hwayang-dong`, a safe-haven of Song Shi-yeol to `Hwayang Gugok` with the efforts of his disciples. It is described that Gugok has the essences as a `place` with a strange story of Okgye Gugok. Next, this study analyzes the identification of each Gugok through individual work analysis. In Chapter Three, The identification of Gugok embodied on the works are studied by reviewing the meaning a writer implied with physical environments of Gugok, actions (experiences) taken in there and Gugok. In Chapter Four, it is described that the identification of Gugok may vary according to the attitude of person who experiences Gugok. Lastly, the diffusing and changing process of the formed identification of Gugok to the group is learned.
