이 연구의 목적은 모리스 쿠랑(Maurice Courant) 『한국서지』(1894-1896, 1901) 출판 및 유통의 의미를 `19세기 말 - 20세기 초 한국`이란 공간 속에서 규명해보는 것이다. 쿠랑의 『한국서지』는 한불조약(1886)이 체결된 이후 프랑스 파리에서 개최된 만국박람회에서 한국관이 전시되는 시기(1900)에 출판되었다. 쿠랑이 작성한 파리 만국박람회 소개책자에서 그는 『한국서지』 「서설」에서의 관점과는 달리, 제국-한국 사이의 수평적인 교류와 소통을 향한 지향점을 보여준다. 이는 『한국서지 보유편』 「서문」(1901)과 조응되는 시각이기도 하며, 한국의 고전세계에 대한 연구를 통해 쿠랑이 도달한 이해의 수준을 보여주는 것이었다. 하지만 쿠랑의 새로운 지향점과 시각은 불행히도 새로운 그의 저술로는 구현되지 못했다. 무엇보다 `대한제국의 멸망`이란 사건은 그가 발견한 한국고전의 가능성을 구현할 길을 차단한 셈이다. 쿠랑의 이러한 새로운 관점은 쿠랑의 『한국서지』 「서설」의 번역과정, 그를 한국도서를 세계에 알린 개척자로 기억·기념하는 과정 속에서 망각되었다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of publication and distribution of Maurice Courant`s Bibliographie Coreenne(1894 -1896, 1901) within the space `at the end of the 19th century till the beginning of the 20th century, Korea`. This study is particularly focused on the fact that Courant`s Bibliographie Coreenne was published in between the time that Korea-France Treaty (1886) was concluded and the time that the Korean pavilion was displayed at the World Exhibition held in Paris, France (1900). In the brochure for the World Exhibition, Paris prepared by Courant, he suggested the pursuit for horizontal exchange and communication between the Empire and Korea differently from his viewpoint in “Introduction”(Bibliographie Coreenne, t.1, 1894). This view also conforms to “Avertissement”(Supplement a la Bibliographie Coreenne, 1901), and it shows the level of understanding that Courant reached through the research on the world of Korean classics. His new point of view, however, could not be developed to more concretized discussion. Also, in the process of translating “Introduction”(Bibliographie Coreenne, t.1, 1894), and in the process to remember and commemorate him as a pioneer that let the world know of Korean books, it was forgotten.
