본 연구는 소설 등장캐릭터 간 관계 번역에서 번역자가 맥락 구성에 참여하고 구체화하는 양상을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 동식물 및 사물이 등장하는 영어 텍스트와 1인칭 시점의 영어 텍스트를 선정하였다. 한국어에서는 담화 참여자간 말단계가 표시되어야 하므로 동식물 및 사물이 등장하는 영어 텍스트를 선정하였으며, 1인칭 시점의 영어 텍스트를 선정한 이유는 1인칭 화자가 다른 등장캐릭터를 지칭할 때 화자와 이들 간의 관계가 어떻게 번역되는지 고찰하기가 용이하기 때문이다. 번역자는 등장캐릭터 간의 관계를 면밀히 관찰하여 맥락 구성 및 구체화에 참여하며, 번역자가 파악한 등장캐릭터 간의 관계는 관련 언어적 요소를 통해서 반영되는 바, 구체적으로 호칭, 평가어, 말단계, 서법, 양상, 대명사 등을 통해 나타난다. 번역사가 파악한 등장캐릭터 간의 관계가 번역에서 드러나는 양상을 Halliday의 체계기능언어학의 틀을 사용하여 분석하였다.

The purpose of this study is to examine how translators participate in the construction of relationships among characters in literary text translation. Texts with animals and inanimate objects as their characters, and those with first person point of view were chosen for this purpose. When translating a text which has animals and inanimate objects as its characters, the translator first needs to establish relationships between them to determine speech levels, as they are not particularly marked in the English language, whereas the Korean language encodes them in affixes. A text with a first person point of view was also chosen in order to observe how the first person narrator refers to other characters in the translation. It was observed that different translators set different relationships among the characters in the text and reflected them in their translations. The study also shows how translators intervene to elaborate the context where the character relationships change. Halliday`s Systemic Functional Linguistics is used to analyse the translations. In particular, focus is given to the Tenor and lexico-grammatical features including vocatives, appraisal, speech levels, mood, modality, and pronouns.
