이 글은 염상섭의 『사랑과 죄』에 등장하는 아편중독자들의 모습을 통해서 1920년대 아편중독에 대한 사회적인 인식과 작가의식을 규명하고자 했다. 이제까지 아편중독과 관련된 소설 연구는 1930년대에 집중되어 있었다. 1920년대 조선에 아편중독자가 증가하게 된 것은 일제가 조선에 아편을 재배하고, 이를 불법으로 유통했기 때문이다. 그러나 『사랑과 죄』에서 아편 중독자는 남여 주인공의 사랑을 방해하는 적대자들이자, 가정을 몰락시키는 주범으로 지목되고 있다. 「불효자식」, 「버릇」에서도 아편 중독자들은 부잣집 아들에 나약하고, 의지가 약한 인물들로 그려지면서 아편 중독의 원인을 개인에게 돌리고 있다. 또한 『사랑과 죄』에서 해주집은 서사의 시작과 끝에서 중요한 역할을 맡고 있다. 그녀는 미스터리 소설의 범죄자처럼 결국 살해됨으로써 범죄자의 이미지를 강화하게 된다. 그녀는 아편중독자이기 때문에 사회적인 타자가 되었고, 결국 죽음을 맞이하게 된 것이다. 이는 아편 중독의 원인을 개인에게 돌리고, 일제의 이중적인 아편정책을 은폐하는 효과를 낳고 있다.

This paper is analyzed the representation of the opium addicts in Yeum Sang-seup`s Love and Sin including Chae Man-sik`s The Undutiful Child and Lee Ik-sang`s Bad Habit. This novels describes the opium addicts as the son of the rich and the weak who have a weak mind, so writer satirizes this addicts. But in fact, the reason of appearing the opium addicts in 1920`s is the Japanese opium policy which raised the poppy in Chosun and distributed the opium illegally. But the opium addicts in 1920`s novel interrupt the love between hero and heroin and lose her life by her partner, so she is become a antagonist and a criminal. This makes the opium addicts the others and conceal the dual policy of Japanese opium in 1920`s
