20세기 초 다양한 형태의 잡가집이 대량으로 출간되었지만, 노래 곡목들은 대부분 중복되고 있다는 사실 때문에 대부분의 잡가집들은 `엇비슷한 것`으로 속단 내려진 채였다. 이 글은 이러한 지금까지의 인식과는 달리 이 시기 잡가집들이 개개 개별성과 의의로 출간되었음을 밝히고자 하는 목표로 작성되었다. 이를 위해 당대 가장 많은 잡가집을 발간한 서울의 창가교사 이상준의 6권 잡가집을 하나의 사례로 분석했다. 분석 결과 이상준 잡가집 출간 방향은 두 가지로 요약되어 나타났다. 하나는 재래 속곡들을 서양식 오선보로 채록하고자 한 것으로, 『조선속곡집상권』(1913) 『신찬속곡집』(1921, 1923, 1924) 『조선속곡집』(1929)이 이에 해당한다. 다른 하나는 재래 속곡사설 모음집 출간으로, 악보집에서는 지면상 제한으로 담아낼 수 없었던 노랫말들을 별도로 모아 만든 『조선잡가집』(1916) 『조선신구잡가』(1921) 『조선신구잡가』(1929)가 이들이다. 또한 이러한 두 계열의 특성 내부에서 다시 개개 잡가집들은 작품목록이 상당히 겹쳐짐에도 불구하고 당대 잡가집들과는 다른 편집내용을 갖추었으며, 이상준 잡가집 내부에서도 각각 서로 다른 성격의 잡가집들이었음을 확인했다. 또한 이들 개개 서로 다른 속곡집을 출간한 그의 조선악(朝鮮樂) 경력이 창가 작곡과 작사에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는가를 분석했다. 주로 작사를 중심으로 이루어진 대체적인 경향 분석에서 이상준 창가가사의 창작 원천은 바로 이들 속곡들에 뿌리를 두고 있음이 확인되었다.

The purpose of this paper is to reveal a Korean Chang-ga teacher who had defend Korean traditional music during Japanese colonial period. In those days western music spreaded into Korean society by way of Japan. Japanese administration forced to teach western music in schools in the name of "Chang-ga". Compared to Chang-ga Korean traditional folk songs were disregarded even though most Koreans loved to sing them. Lee Sang-Joon, a Chang-ga teacher at that time, recognized the importance of the Korean music. He collected, arranged and published them. He made two kinds of publication of Korean songs. One was the publication of the western staff notaion of Korean traditional folk songs. They were < Joseon popular songs >, < New edition of popular songs >, < Napal Gagokjip >. The second one was collection of the words of the Korean songs. In this case he just collected many songs without staff notation and published < Joseon Japgajip >, < Joseon new and old japga >. Lee Sang-Joon was the only person who draw staff notation of Korean traditional songs. Many people appreciated his achievements. And they were the only staff notation Koreans could use when they wanted to sing Korean traditional folk songs during Japanese colonial period.
