이 글은 황순원 장편소설을 당대 현실과의 관련성 속에서 이해하고자 하였다. 황순원 장편소설에는 당대 현실을 알려주는 표지들, 곧 극장에 상영 중인 영화와 인기를 끌고 있는 TV 프로그램, 사람들이 즐겨 부르던 유행가와 인구에 회자되던 우스갯소리 같은 것들이 자주 등장한다. 굵직굵직한 역사적 사건들이 언급되기도 하고, 이들이 소설의 시간적 배경을 알려주는 역할을 하기도 한다. 소설이 현실에 대한 재현이어야 한다는 시각에서 볼 때 황순원 장편소설은 좋은 평가를 얻기 어렵겠지만, 최소한 황순원 장편소설에 역사와 현실이 결여되어 있다는 기존의 평가는 재고될 필요가 있다. 황순원 장편소설을 제대로 이해하기 위해서는 소설에 언급된 다양한 역사적 사실들을 제대로 이해할 필요가 있다.
This study is a reading of the novels of Hwang Sunwon from the contemporary social, cultural, historical context. We encounter the scenes in which main characters have conversation on the popular movies, songs, TV programs, jokes, historical events. We can confirm exact time in the novels by ascertaining when the movies were on theaters, the songs were sung, the historical events happened. In the view of realism Hwang`s novels can not be masterpieces. However, it is untrue that Hwang`s novels are lack of historical, social and cultural context. Understanding this is the first step to understand Hwang`s novels correctly.
